11. A clinical epidemiological study on end-stage liver disease in Ghana
Sammanfattning : End-stage liver disease (ESLD), including advanced liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), is the final stage of long-standing injury to the liver due to risk factors such as chronic viral hepatitis and alcoholic liver disease. There is a high disease burden and mortality globally, especially in sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries such as Ghana, where the primary cause of HCC and cirrhosis is infection with hepatitis B virus (HBV). 12. Production and delivery of recombinant subunit vaccines
Sammanfattning : Recombinant strategies are today dominating in thedevelopment of modern subunit vaccines. This thesis describesstrategies for the production and recovery of protein subunitimmunogens, and how genetic design of the expression vectorscan be used to adapt the immunogens for incorporation intoadjuvant systems. 13. Structural Studies of Proteins involved in Nucleotide Metabolism : Studies of a ribonucleotide reductase from A. aeolicus and NUDT15
Sammanfattning : This thesis is separated into two parts. The first part concerns ribonucleotide reductase from Aquifex aeolicus. A. aeolicus is a hyperthermophilic bacterium that thrives at extremely high temperatures of 80-95 °C. LÄS MER
14. Aspects of interferon alpha signalling in hematopoetic cells
Sammanfattning : The type I interferons (IFN) are a family of cytokines with pleiothropic activities that include inhibition of viral replication, cell proliferation and activation of the immune system. These properties give the IFNs important physiological and pathological roles in infection and cancer and have led to their therapeutic use for many clinical conditions. LÄS MER
15. Investigation of antiviral and anticancer nucleoside analog substrate recognition of drosophila melanogaster and herpes virus deoxyribonucleoside kinases
Sammanfattning : The deoxyribonucleoside kinase of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster (Dm-dNK) is a multisubstrate enzyme that phosphorylates pyrimidine and purine deoxyribonucleosides as well as several anticancer and antiviral nucleoside analogs. Dm-dNK is sequence related to the human deoxycytidine kinase (dCK), deoxyguanosine kinase (dGK) and thymidine kinase 2 (M), as well as to the herpes simplex virus type-1 thymidine kinase (Hsv-1 TK).
