1. Antibiotic use among children in low- and middle-income countries : Studies on global trends, and contextual determinants of antibiotic prescribing in Eastern Uganda
Sammanfattning : This thesis aimed to systematically map trends in reported antibiotic use (RAU) among sick under-five children across low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) in 2005-2017, and, to understand the contextual determinants of antibiotic prescribing in Eastern Uganda. Based on 132 national surveys from 73 LMICs, and using Bayesian linear regression models, trends in RAU among sick under-five children (with symptoms of fever, diarrhoea or cough with fast/difficult breathing) across LMICs in 2005-2017 were mapped by WHO region, World Bank country income group, symptom complaint (Study-I), and by the following user characteristics: rural/urban residence, maternal education, household wealth and source of care (Study-II). 2. Towards a functioning retail health market : Evaluating the integrated Community Case Management Intervention for Pediatric Febrile Illness in Drug Shops in Rural South Western Uganda
Sammanfattning : Objectives: This thesis examined the health systems effects of implementing the integrated Community Case Management (iCCM) intervention for paediatric febrile illnesses in a retail health market in South Western Uganda. More specifically, it evaluated drug seller interpretation of malaria Rapid Diagnostics Test (RDT) results (study I), adherence to iCCM guidelines (study II) and the intervention effect on households’ perceived quality of drug seller fever care and care-seeking choice. 3. Child health and acute respiratory infections in Ethiopia : epidemiology for prevention and control
Sammanfattning : This thesis is based on studies in Butajira district in the south central part of Ethiopia and one study in the Ethio-Swedish Children's Hospital in Addis Ababa. The Butajira project has a continuous demographic surveillance system, established in 1987 in a sample of 10 communities with a total baseline population of about 30,000. LÄS MER

Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to explore the impact of physical, sexual and emotional violence against women of reproductive age and the level of controlling behaviour in marriage on child health and survival in two different cultural settings: Bangladesh and Nicaragua.
