  1. 11. Groundwater vulnerability assessment using process-based models

    Författare :Riitta Lindström; Roger Thunvik; Pertti Vakkilainen; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Environmental technology; Database; Groundwater vulnerability; Hydrogeological environment; Process-based models; Penetration depth; Turnover time; Miljöteknik; Environmental engineering; Miljöteknik;

    Sammanfattning : The focus of this thesis is on groundwater vulnerability assessment by process-based simulation models and data acquisition for these assessments. A modelling system for intrinsic groundwater vulnerability assessment in water supply areas was developed, consisting of flow- and transport models for the unsaturated zone and the groundwater zone, coupled to a geographical informa-tion system. 2. 12. The different roles of crayfish in benthic food webs

    Författare :Patrik Stenroth; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Marinbiologi; limnologi; aquatic ecology; marine biology; food chain length; stable isotopes; environmental gradients; diet; crayfish; akvatisk ekologi; limnology; Hydrobiology;

    Sammanfattning : I show that crayfish consume detritus, algae, macrophytes, and an array of invertebrates. Crayfish were found to reduce invertebrate densities. However, prey mobility seemed to be a key factor regulating the strength of interactions between crayfish and prey. LÄS MER

  3. 13. Phosphorus removal in reactive filter materials : factors affecting the sorption capacity

    Författare :Charlotte Nilsson; Gunno Renman; Lena Johansson Westholm; Aleksandra Drizo; Annelie Hedström; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : Phosphorus is an essential component in all living organisms; it is one of the components of the DNA and the key element in the energy supplying molecule adenosine triphosphate (ATP). Throughout the history, humans have been recycling phosphorus to agriculture; thereby increasing the yield, examples of this includes the burning of plants and the use of manure. LÄS MER

  4. 14. Environmental Considerations in the Zero-waste Valorisation of Bauxite Residue : A Life Cycle Perspective

    Författare :Peter James Joyce; Anna Björklund; Hellweg Stefanie; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Life Cycle Assessment LCA ; bauxite residue; waste valorisation; Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials NORM ; Life Cycle Thinking; LCA software; Circular Economy; Livscykelanalys LCA ; bauxitrest; avfallsvalorisering; naturligt förekommande radioaktiva ämnen NORM ; livscykeltänkande; LCA-programvara; cirkulär ekonomi; Planering och beslutsanalys; Planning and Decision Analysis;

    Sammanfattning : Bauxite residue, also known as red mud, is produced in large quantities as a result of alumina refining (the first stage in aluminium production), and is one of the world’s most abundant and important industrial wastes. As demand for aluminium continues to increase and space to store this residue diminishes, the potential to utilise bauxite residue as a secondary resource is increasingly being considered by the alumina industry. 5. 15. Sulphur Regulations for Shipping – Why a Regional Approach?: Scientific and Economic Arguments in IMO Documents 1988-1997

    Författare :Erik Svensson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; costs; framing; shipping; SECA; distribution; environmental; policy environment; international; MARPOL; conceptual lens; IMO; Annex VI; regional approach; economic interests; directional problem; benefits; policy-making; SOx; science;

    Sammanfattning : Some environmental issues for shipping are regulated globally with uniform standards and others with stricter regulations in specific areas. This thesis aims to provide an understanding of why a regional approach was chosen with SOx Emission Control Areas (SECAs) as the main form of control of sulphur oxide emissions from international shipping, with explanations based on documents from negotiations within the International Maritime Organization (IMO) during 1988-1997.
