1. The effect of wood properties on oxidative isolation of cellulose nanofibrils and characterization of networks
Sammanfattning : Wood is a natural resource that has been an integral part of society for as long as humans have been on Earth. From serving as fuel for fire and construction material the applications of wood has been developed in modern times and only surged as a consequence of societal strive for sustainability and usage of green resources. 2. Coated Norway Spruce : Influence of Wood Characteristics on Water Sorption and Coating Durability
Sammanfattning : Wood used outdoors is often degraded and discoloured by microorganisms as a natural part of its life cycle, particularly when exposed to high levels of moisture for prolonged times. In this case, the application of a coating (i.e. paint) is an option for increasing the service life of the wood. LÄS MER
3. The significance of ethylene and ethylene response factors in wood formation of hybrid aspen
Sammanfattning : The woody tissues serve to stabilise plants, store nutrients and translocate water and minerals. The formation of wood, or ’secondary xylem’, follows a well-defined developmental gradient which is initiated by cell division activity in the vascular cambium. LÄS MER
4. The biology and properties of wood for nanocellulose production
Sammanfattning : Wood is a renewable and environmentally friendly raw material envisioned for the production of novel materials. In this interdisciplinary thesis project, I investigated genetic factors controlling cellulose biosynthesis, cellulose microfibril dimensions, wood mechanical properties and factors that influence nanocellulose extraction from wood. 5. Poplar wood formation : genotypical influences on structure and chemistry
Sammanfattning : Genotypical effects on wood formation in aspen (Populus tremula x tremuloides) have been studied at morphological, ultrastructural and micro-distributional levels. To characterize transgenically induced modifications, light-, fluorescence-, UV-, scanning- and transmission electron microscopy have been applied complemented by immunolabeling, histochemistry, multivariate statistics and image analysis.
