6. Epac2 signaling at the β-cell plasma membrane
Sammanfattning : Secretion of appropriate amounts of insulin from pancreatic β-cells is crucial for glucose homeostasis. The β-cells release insulin in response to glucose and other nutrients, hormones and neurotransmitters, which trigger intracellular signaling cascades, that result in exocytotic fusion of insulin-containing vesicles with the plasma membrane. 7. Temporal monitoring of intracellular Ca2+ signaling and origins of Ca2+ oscillations
Sammanfattning : This thesis examined parameters influencing stimulated cytoplasmic free Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) oscillations in hepatocytes and pancreatic beta-cells. Hepatic glucose output is regulated in part by hormones such as vasopressin that act through [Ca 2+]i oscillations. LÄS MER
8. Paracrine control of glucagon secretion in the pancreatic α-cell: Studies involving optogenetic cell activation
Sammanfattning : ABSTRACT The mechanisms controlling glucagon secretion by α-cells in islets of Langerhans were studied. We generated mice with the light-activated ion channel ChR2 specifically expressed in β-, α-, and δ-cells, and explored the spatio-temporal relationship between cell activation and glucagon release. 9. On The Innervation of Salivary Glands and Treatment of Dry Mouth - An Experimental and Clinical Study
Sammanfattning : Detailed knowledge of the innervation of the parotid gland is essential in basic studies on various neuroglandular phenomena as well as in various types of orofacial surgery. The innervation is more complex than usually depicted in Textbooks. LÄS MER
10. Stress response and virulence in Vibrio anguillarum
Sammanfattning : Bacteria use quorum sensing, a cell to cell signaling mechanism mediated by small molecules that are produced by specific signal molecule synthases, to regulate gene expression in response to population density. In Vibrio anguillarum, the quorum-sensing phosphorelay channels information from three hybrid sensor kinases VanN, VanQ, CqsS that sense signal molecules produced by the synthases VanM, VanS and CqsA, onto the phosphotransferase VanU, to regulate activity of the response regulator VanO.
