  1. 6. Epac2 signaling at the β-cell plasma membrane

    Författare :Ida Alenkvist; Anders Tengholm; Olga Göransson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; β-cell; insulin secretion; cAMP; Ca2 ; Epac; Rap; exocytosis; sulfonylurea; Medical Cell Biology; Medicinsk cellbiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Secretion of appropriate amounts of insulin from pancreatic β-cells is crucial for glucose homeostasis. The β-cells release insulin in response to glucose and other nutrients, hormones and neurotransmitters, which trigger intracellular signaling cascades, that result in exocytotic fusion of insulin-containing vesicles with the plasma membrane. 2. 7. Temporal monitoring of intracellular Ca2+ signaling and origins of Ca2+ oscillations

    Författare :Dominic-Luc Webb; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis examined parameters influencing stimulated cytoplasmic free Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) oscillations in hepatocytes and pancreatic beta-cells. Hepatic glucose output is regulated in part by hormones such as vasopressin that act through [Ca 2+]i oscillations. LÄS MER

  3. 8. Paracrine control of glucagon secretion in the pancreatic α-cell: Studies involving optogenetic cell activation

    Författare :Caroline Miranda; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Type 2 Diabetes; Glucagon; α-Cell; Optogenetics;

    Sammanfattning : ABSTRACT The mechanisms controlling glucagon secretion by α-cells in islets of Langerhans were studied. We generated mice with the light-activated ion channel ChR2 specifically expressed in β-, α-, and δ-cells, and explored the spatio-temporal relationship between cell activation and glucagon release. 4. 9. On The Innervation of Salivary Glands and Treatment of Dry Mouth - An Experimental and Clinical Study

    Författare :Nina Khosravani; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Parotid gland; Denervation; Acetylcholine synthesis; Otic ganglion; Auriculo-temporal nerve; Facial nerve; Neuropeptides; Salivary gland hypofunction; Physostigmine;

    Sammanfattning : Detailed knowledge of the innervation of the parotid gland is essential in basic studies on various neuroglandular phenomena as well as in various types of orofacial surgery. The innervation is more complex than usually depicted in Textbooks. LÄS MER

  5. 10. Stress response and virulence in Vibrio anguillarum

    Författare :Barbara Weber; Debra L. Milton; James D. Oliver; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Vibrio anguillarum; quorum sensing; Type VI secretion; stress response; virulence; skin colonization; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology;

    Sammanfattning : Bacteria use quorum sensing, a cell to cell signaling mechanism mediated by small molecules that are produced by specific signal molecule synthases, to regulate gene expression in response to population density. In Vibrio anguillarum, the quorum-sensing phosphorelay channels information from three hybrid sensor kinases VanN, VanQ, CqsS that sense signal molecules produced by the synthases VanM, VanS and CqsA, onto the phosphotransferase VanU, to regulate activity of the response regulator VanO.
