6. Proximal femoral fractures : functional outcome, quality of life and mortality
Sammanfattning : A hip fracture in the elderly is one of the most devastating consequences of osteoporosis and has a high rate of complications, including death and a serious threat to the patient s future mobility, social functioning, quality of life and autonomy. The aim of this thesis was to gain a better knowledge of the functional outcome after treatment with an intramedullary (proximal femoral nail;PFN) or an extramedullary (Medoff sliding plate; MSP) fixation device in patients with unstable trochanteric and subtrochanteric fractures. 7. Hip Fractures - Functional assessments and factors influencing in-hospital outcome of patients with hip fracture, a physiotherapeutic perspective
Sammanfattning : A hip fracture is probably one of the most fatal fractures for the elderly and estimated worldwide to reach 5 million cases annually by the year 2050. Thus, continuing efforts in preventing fractures, with more research and improved treatment strategies for those who do fracture, seem crucial. LÄS MER
8. Outcome in patients with trochanteric and subtrochanteric femoral fractures : aspects on surgical methods, quality of life and cognitive function
Sammanfattning : A hip fracture is a significant cause of increased morbidity and mortality in elderly people and Scandinavia presents the highest incidence of hip fractures worldwide. The hip fracture is a serious consequence of osteoporosis which demands acute surgery with a high risk of complications and a threat to a continued independent living. LÄS MER
9. Dynamic fixation of unstable trochanteric hip fractures. A clinical and radiographic evaluation of the Medoff sliding plate
Sammanfattning : In stabilising extracapsular hip fractures, the Medoff sliding plate (MSP) differs from other screw-plates by its compression capacity along the femoral shaft (uniaxial dynamization). Additional compression along the neck of femur can be achieved by primary release of the lag screw (biaxial dynamization). LÄS MER
10. Atypical femoral fractures: Another brick in the wall : On aspects of healing, treatment strategies and surveillance
Sammanfattning : Atypical femoral fractures are stress fractures of the femoral subtrochanteric and diaphyseal region. It is a common notion that these fractures heal poorly, if at all. In this thesis we show that patients with atypical femoral fractures have a good capacity to generate bone and therefore heal fractures. LÄS MER
