31. Immunocytochemical studies of excitatory amino acid neurotransmitters and transporters in the spinal cord and nucleus submedius
Sammanfattning : The amino acid glutamate is today regarded as the main fast excitatory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system and a large body of evidence support that glutamate serves as a neurotransmitter in primary afferent terminals in the spinal cord. Previous evidence also suggests that the closely related amino acid aspartate may serve a similar role in some primary afferent terminals. LÄS MER

33. Diagnostic and therapeutic strategies following spinal cord and brachial plexus injuries
Sammanfattning : Traumatic injuries to the spinal cord and brachial plexus induce a significant inflammatory response in the nervous tissue with progressive degeneration of neurons and glial cells, and cause considerable physical and mental suffering in affected patients. This thesis investigates the effects of the antioxidants N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC) and acetyl-L- carnitine (ALC) on the survival of motoneurons in the brainstem and spinal cord, the expression of pro-apoptotic and pro-inflammatory cell markers, axonal sprouting and glial cell reactions after spinal hemisection in adult rats. 34. Trophic factors, neuroprotection and spinal cord repair
Sammanfattning : Background: There is no cure for paralysis. The only drug therapy presently in use, acute high-dose methylprednisolone, has only modest effects on outcome. There is therefore a great need for new therapies. LÄS MER
35. Analysis of neuropathic pain after spinal cord injury
Sammanfattning : Longstanding neuropathic pain is a challenge in spinal cord injury (SCI) rehabilitation. Once established it is difficult to treat successfully. Neuropathic pain has a negative influence on quality of life and on the outcome of rehabilitation. The prevalence of neuropathic pain after SCI varies in different studies. LÄS MER
