1. Bioanalysis using capillary electrophoresis and mass spectrometry : Applied on proteins, protein nanofibrils and polyvinyl alcohol microbubbles
Sammanfattning : The sequencing of the genome of various species, including the human species, have led to increased understanding about how a protein structure is generated, and how specific structures are related to the proteins’ functionality. In paper I and II of this thesis, the folding of proteins in vitro to form hierarchical nanostructures, which in vivo often have a pathological effect, have been studied. LÄS MER
2. Interaction Between Microgels and Oppositely Charged Proteins
Sammanfattning : This thesis reports on interactions between microgels and oppositely charged proteins. Two types of negatively charged microgels are investigated: poly(acrylic acid) microgels of 60-80 µm in diameter, and colloidal poly(NIPAM-co-acrylic acid) microgels of around 1 µm in diameter. 3. Exploring the Propanediol Utilization Pathway in Lactobacillus reuteri
Sammanfattning : Concerns regarding environmental issues have led to increasing efforts for investigating sustainable production routes for the future industry that is based on renewable resources. Among the biobased chemicals, the C3-chemicals 3-hydroxypropionaldehyde (3-HPA), 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PDO) and 3-hydroxypropionic acid (3-HP), have been identified as top candidates for the chemical industry. 4. Engineered core : shell nanoparticles: synthesis, characterisation, and biocompatibility studies
Sammanfattning : Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) have emerged as promising contrast agents for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Some SPIONs are already approved for clinical use. Coating of these nanoparticles with an additional biocompatible layer serves to improve the colloidal stability and biocompatibility. LÄS MER
5. Phase Phenomena in Polymer Networks : Empirical Studies on the Influence of Hydrophobicity, Charge Density and Crosslinks on Macroion-Induced Phase Transitions in Polyelectrolyte Gels
Sammanfattning : The thesis concerns polyelectrolyte gels in contact with oppositely charged proteins and surfactant micelles, and includes of four papers (I-IV). In paper I confocal Raman spectroscopy was introduced as a method to trace micelles and investigate the structure of gel-surfactant complexes, in phase separated gel spheres. LÄS MER
