21. Patterns of evolution in a young species, the Baltic seaweed Fucus radicans
Sammanfattning : To be able to interpret patterns of biodiversity it is important to understand the processes by which new species evolve and how closely related species remain reproductively isolated and ecologically differentiated. This thesis centers on the evolution of the two brown algae Fucus radicans and Fucus vesiculosus in the Baltic Sea, where Fucus radicans very recently diverged from F. LÄS MER
22. Two-Stage Conversion of Land and Marine Biomass for Biogas and Biohydrogen Production
Sammanfattning : The replacement of fossil fuels by renewable fuels such as biogas and biohydrogen will require efficient and economically competitive process technologies together with new kinds of biomass. A two-stage system for biogas production has several advantages over the widely used one-stage continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR). LÄS MER
23. Seaweeds as a future protein source: innovative cultivation methods for protein production
Sammanfattning : As the global population is projected to reach approximately 10 billion people by 2050, it is estimated that we will need to produce up to 60% more food compared to 2010. Although the current food production system contributes to 25% of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide, accounts for 70-80% of eutrophication and freshwater usage, and occupies half of all ice- and desert-free land, it fails to meet the global nutritional needs. 24. Studies of Long-lived Radionuclides in the Environment - with Emphasis on 99Tc, 237Np and Pu Isotopes
Sammanfattning : Studies of the long-lived anthropogenic radionuclides 99Tc, 237Np, 239Pu and 240Pu were performed in marine and terrestrial areas contaminated by different accidental and controlled releases of radioactive materials. The three main sources discussed in this thesis are nuclear weapons tests, nuclear reprocessing plants and the Chernobyl accident. LÄS MER
25. Sea cages, seaweeds and seascapes : Causes and consequences of spatial links between aquaculture and ecosystems
Sammanfattning : Aquaculture is of growing importance in the global seafood production. The environmental impact of aquaculture will largely depend on the type of environment in which the aquaculture system is placed. LÄS MER
