1. Biomarkers and bioindicators of hypoxia and sediment toxicity in Monoporeia affinis
Sammanfattning : Two of the most pressing environmental problems in the Baltic Sea are pollution and oxygen deficiency. The aim of this doctoral thesis was to evaluate a set of biomarkers and reproductive variables in the amphipod Monoporeia affinis to test their suitability as indicators of exposure to contaminants and hypoxia. 2. Studies of Long-lived Radionuclides in the Environment - with Emphasis on 99Tc, 237Np and Pu Isotopes
Sammanfattning : Studies of the long-lived anthropogenic radionuclides 99Tc, 237Np, 239Pu and 240Pu were performed in marine and terrestrial areas contaminated by different accidental and controlled releases of radioactive materials. The three main sources discussed in this thesis are nuclear weapons tests, nuclear reprocessing plants and the Chernobyl accident. LÄS MER
3. Improved environmental monitoring and assessment : Establishing links between effects of chemical pollution at different levels of biological organization in a Baltic Sea bioindicator species (Monoporeia affinis)
Sammanfattning : A large number of chemicals enters the marine environment via atmospheric deposition, run-off, rivers and streams, industrial effluents and municipal wastewater. To understand how chemicals affect environmental health, monitoring and assessment approaches need to combine physical, chemical and biological effect parameters from different levels of biological organization. 4. Effects of Past and Current Land Use on Biodiversity: from a semi-natural grassland on Öland (Sweden) to a European perspective
Sammanfattning : Concerns are increasing about the loss of biodiversity under land use change and how this will affect the ecosystem services provided by natural and semi-natural communities and consequently how this will threaten human well-being. The thesis examines the impact of present and past land use on different aspects of biodiversity; namely species diversity, traits and functional diversity and on ecosystem services. LÄS MER
5. Heavy metal contamination and toxicity : Studies of Macroalgae from the Tanzanian Coast
Sammanfattning : Concentrations of various metals are elevated above background levels in several intertidal areas along the Tanzanian coasts. However, there is little available information concerning the toxicity of these metals and how the uptake of these metals by bioindicators are influenced by external factors, such as heavy rains and increased coastal eutrophication, which tend to fluctuate.
