  1. 11. Retinoid processing in vivo : characterization and structure-function analysis of retinol dehydrogenases

    Författare :Kristian Tryggvason; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Retinol; vitamin A; retinol dehydrogenase; reporter assay;

    Sammanfattning : Retinoids (vitamin A derivatives) are vital nutrients that regulate a variety of physiological processes, including embryonic development, postnatal growth, reproduction, cell differentiation as well as maintenance of the immune system and vision. Most of the physiological functions of retinoids are believed to be controlled by retinoic acid (RA) altered gene expression via two classes of nuclear hormone receptors, the RARs and RXRs. LÄS MER

  2. 12. Experimental vitreoretinal surgery in the rabbit eye - electrophysiology and morphology

    Författare :Karin Gjörloff; Lund Oftalmologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Oftalmologi; Ophtalmology; retinectomy; GFAP; PKC; rabbit; vitrectomy; focal laser photocoagulation; full-field electroretinography; multifocal electroretinography;

    Sammanfattning : The field of vitreoretinal surgery has expanded greatly over the last decades. A continuous refinement of surgical methods and instruments has increased the number of treatable retinal disorders. Vitrectomy, retinectomy and laser treatment are all part of the modern surgical arsenal. LÄS MER

  3. 13. NFAT signaling in chronic and acute inflammation - A novel target for the treatment of diabetic vascular complications and acute pancreatitis?

    Författare :Anna Zetterqvist; Diabetiska komplikationer; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NFAT; vascular; diabetes; inflammation; atherosclerosis; diabetic retinopathy; acute pancreatitis; osteopontin; VCAM-1; A-285222;

    Sammanfattning : Diabetic patients suffer from macro- and microvascular complications causing increased morbidity and mortality. How hyperglycemia provokes vascular damage remains unclear, but glucose is believed to fuel a harmful low-grade chronic inflammation of the vessel wall. LÄS MER

  4. 14. Molecular mechanism(s) underlying neurodegeneration in SCA7 disease : Role of NOX enzymes and oxidative stress

    Författare :Abiodun Ajayi; Anna-Lena Ström; Ana Cristina Rego; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; neurodegeneration; oxidative stress; NOX; metabolism; p53; neurokemi med molekylär neurobiologi; Neurochemistry with Molecular Neurobiology;

    Sammanfattning : Spinocerebellar ataxia type 7 (SCA7) is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disorder caused by a CAG trinucleotide expansion in the SCA7 gene resulting in progressive ataxia and retinal dystrophy. SCA7 belongs to a group of neurodegenerative disorders called polyglutamine (polyQ) diseases, that share the common feature of glutamine tract expansions within otherwise unrelated proteins. LÄS MER

  5. 15. Molecular aspects of retinol uptake and activation

    Författare :Martin Lidén; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Retinoids (vitamin A derivatives) are essential for a wide variety of physiological processes, including embryonic development, growth, vision, reproduction, and maintenance of various epithelia and the immune system. 11-Cis-retinal serves as the chromophore of the visual pigments in the retina, whereas the hormonal retinoids, all-trans and 9-cis retinoic acid (RA), regulate the non-visual functions via activation of nuclear retinoid receptors (RARs and RXRs).
