21. Immune and autoimmune responses to HIV-1 in mucosa and other tissues
Sammanfattning : The aim of these studies was to evaluate routes and devices for administration of HIV-1 DNA vaccines. In particular we were interested in mucosal routes for the induction of immunity at mucosal surfaces. We studied the effects of a novel mucosal route, jet-injection, for induction of systemic and local responses. LÄS MER
22. On enchytraeids and naidids: Life history traits and responses to environmental stress
Sammanfattning : My thesis shows that enchytraeids and naidids are sensitive to various forms of environmental stress, which in combination with the wide distribution of both families make them highly suitable for use in risk assessment and soil monitoring. Enchytraeids were subject to chemical stress under both laboratory and field conditions. LÄS MER
23. Role of toll-like receptors in host responses to mucosal bacterial infections
Sammanfattning : The first contact between invading bacteria and the host occurs at the mucosal surface. Interestingly, the mucosal linings of different organs are exposed to bacteria to various degrees. LÄS MER
24. The role of herbivores in mediating responses of tundra ecosystems to climate change
Sammanfattning : The Arctic areas are warming more rapidly than other parts of the world. Increasing temperatures are predicted to result in shrubification, higher productivity, declining species diversity and new species invasions to the tundra. LÄS MER
25. GARD - Genomic Allergen Rapid Detection. A Testing Strategy for Assessment of Chemical Sensitizers
Sammanfattning : The modern world is increasingly dependent of the use of chemicals. The chemical industries have greatly contributed to the high standard of living in industrialised societies, and chemical compounds surround us in everyday life. Unfortunately, a vast number of chemicals cause adverse effects on the environment and human health. LÄS MER
