  1. 21. Verification of Dose Calculation Algorithms in Treatment Planning Systems for External Radiation Therapy: A Monte Carlo Approach

    Författare :Elinore Wieslander; Lund Medicinsk strålningsfysik; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; radiologi; tomografi; medicinsk instrumentering; radiotherapy; dose calculation algorithm; verification; Monte Carlo calculation; electron beam; photon beam; Clinical physics; radiology; tomography; medical instrumentation; Klinisk fysiologi; treatment planning system;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis presents a new verification concept, the virtual accelerator, for dose calculation algorithms used in treatment planning systems (TPSs) for external beam radiotherapy. The algorithm input data required to implement a treatment unit in the TPS are generated by Monte Carlo simulations as are the beam reference data needed for the subsequent evaluation of the dose calculation algorithm. 2. 22. Ultra wideband microwave hyperthermia for brain cancer treatment

    Författare :Massimiliano Zanoli; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; ultra wideband; treatment planning; brain cancer; applicator design; time reversal; microwave hyperthermia;

    Sammanfattning : Despite numerous clinical trials demonstrating that microwave hyperthermia is a powerful adjuvant modality in the treatment of cancers, there have been few instances where this method has been applied to brain tumors. The reason is a combination of anatomical and physiological factors in this site that require an extra degree of accuracy and precision in the thermal dose delivery. LÄS MER

  3. 23. Comparative treatment planning in external radiotherapy of malignant tumours : Potential gains using protons

    Författare :Ulf Isacsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Oncology; Breast cancer; comparative treatment; Ewing sarcoma; oesophageal cancer; protontherapy; radiotherapy; rectal cancer; treatment planning algorithms; Onkologi; Oncology; Onkologi; Oncology; onkologi;

    Sammanfattning : It is well known that protons have physical characteristics superior to conventional radiation qualities in external beam radiotherapy. The primary aim of this work is to determine if the physical advantages also may lead to clinical advantages. LÄS MER

  4. 24. Advances in Microwave Hyperthermia Treatment using Time Reversal

    Författare :Hana Dobsicek Trefna; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; microwave hyperthermia; time reversal; microwave thermometry; annular phased array; amplifier system; treatment planning;

    Sammanfattning : The last twenty years have seen many clinical studies showing the ability of hyperthermia to remarkably enhance response to radiation therapy and chemotherapy. The objective of hyperthermia treatment is to raise the temperature in tumors to therapeutic levels, for a sufficient period of time, in order to achieve cell death or render the cells more sensitive to ionizing radiation and/or chemotherapy. 5. 25. Relative biological effectiveness in proton therapy: accounting for variability and uncertainties

    Författare :Jakob Ödén; Iuliana Toma-Dasu; Kjell Eriksson; Radhe Mohan; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; proton therapy; relative biological effectiveness; linear energy transfer; proton track-end optimisation; radiation-induced toxicity; Medical Radiation Physics; medicinsk strålningsfysik;

    Sammanfattning : Radiation therapy is widely used for treatments of malignant diseases. The search for the optimal radiation treatment approach for a specific case is a complex task, ultimately seeking to maximise the tumour control probability (TCP) while minimising the normal tissue complication probability (NTCP).
