  1. 1. Mechanisms for the Influence from Ice Nucleus Aerosols on Clouds and their Indirect Effects: Cloud Modelling

    Författare :Deepak Waman; MERGE: ModElling the Regional and Global Earth system; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; clouds; Radiation; Ice Nuclei; Primary Biological Aerosol Particles; Ice particles; Secondary ice; primary ice; Aerosol particles; thunderstorm;

    Sammanfattning : The role of multiple groups of primary biological aerosol particles (PBAPs) as ice nucleating particles (INPs), and of ice formation processes such as time-dependent freezing of various INPs, and various secondary ice production(SIP) mechanisms in overall ice concentration has been evaluated in a range of cloud systems by simulating them numerically with the state-of-the-art ‘Aerosol-Cloud’ (AC) model in a 3D mesoscale domain. Also, the mechanismsof aerosol indirect effects (AIEs) arising from anthropogenic INPs, and the responses to these AIEs from time-dependent INP freezing and SIP processes are investigated in the simulated clouds. 2. 2. Ice load prediction for design of ice-going ships for inland waterways

    Författare :Meng Zhang; Karl Garme; Magnus Burman; Malin Åkermo; Pentti Kujala; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; inland waterway ship; ice load; ice conditions; ice properties; FSICR; probabilistic method; ice-hull interaction; numerical model; structural response; finite element analysis; Engineering Mechanics; Teknisk mekanik;

    Sammanfattning : With increasing interest in utilizing the inland waterways (IWW) in European countries, the design of IWW vessels gains attention both from a transport efficiency and an emission control point of view. However, unlike in western and central European countries, in Nordic countries, e.g. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Efficient hull design for ice conditions in inland waterways

    Författare :Meng Zhang; Karl Garme; Magnus Burman; Pentti Kujala; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Inland waterway ship; ice conditions; ice properties; ice-hull interaction; ice resistance; impact load; numerical method; operation time window; lightweight design; composites and sandwich structure; Farkostteknik; Vehicle and Maritime Engineering;

    Sammanfattning : With increasing interest in utilizing the inland waterways (IWW) in European countries, the design of IWW vessels gains attention both from a transport efficiency and an emission control point of view. Usually, IWW ships are designed without ice operation concerns and are structurally weaker than ships designed according to ice-class notifications from the classification societies. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Light conditions in seasonally ice-covered waters : within the Baltic Sea region

    Författare :Elina Kari; Susanne Kratzer; Matti Leppäranta; Monika Winder; Tiit Kutser; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Seasonal sea ice; Fast ice; Drift ice; Phytoplankton spring bloom; Under-ice plume; Turbidity; Suspended particulate matter; Chlorophyll; Coloured dissolved organic matter; Baltic Sea; Marine Ecology; marin ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : Seasonal ice cover is a major driver of seasonality in aquatic ecosystems in the Baltic Sea region. Ice cover influences the underwater light conditions directly by limiting the light transfer and indirectly by modifying the mixing and circulation under the ice. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Brash Ice and Level Ice Growth, Effects of Snow

    Författare :Vasiola Zhaka; Andrzej Cwirzen; Kaj Riska; Robert Ettema; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; brash ice growth; level ice growth; snow effects; slush; snow ice; macroporosity; piece size distribution; Byggmaterial; Building Materials;

    Sammanfattning : Brash ice occurs due to frequent navigation in ice-infested waters, typically along established navigation tracks regularly maintained by icebreakers and harbors. The accumulation and consolidation of brash ice between two ship passages are influenced by meteorological factors including the cumulative freezing air temperatures, and the mechanical processes such as ice-breaking due to ship passages.
