  1. 26. Pollen Competition as a Target for Sexual Selection in Plants

    Författare :Åsa Lankinen; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Sexual selection; Pollen tube growth rate; Pollen selection models; Pollen interactions; Pollen competition; Plants; Phenotypic plasticity; Non-random mating; Genotype by environment interactions; Mate choice; Viola tricolor.; Plant ecology; Växtekologi;

    Sammanfattning : According to the theory of sexual selection, traits can evolve because they confer a mating advantage in competition with members from the same sex. In animals, sexual selection is considered as an important evolutionary force. In this thesis I have investigated the potential for sexual selection in plants. LÄS MER

  2. 27. Wild bees in agricultural landscapes: Modelling land use and climate effects across space and time

    Författare :Maria Blasi Romero; Centrum för miljö- och klimatvetenskap (CEC); []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Wild bees; Agricultural landscapes; climate change and agriculture; Phenology; Land-use; Model transferability; Ecological models; Pollination;

    Sammanfattning : Wild bees are declining in many parts of the world, which poses a risk for crop pollination and ecosystem health. Land use and climate change are two of the main drivers of the decline, and understanding the interactive effects of these two drivers and wild bees is very important to be able to develop proper responses and mitigate future negative effects. 3. 28. The effect of honeybee-specific lactic acid bacteria on american foulbrood disease of honeybees

    Författare :Sepideh Lamei; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : The honeybee, Apis mellifera, is one of the most economically important pollinators and highly valued for its honey and wax production. Managed honeybees occupy an increasingly critical role in agricultural productivity and food security. LÄS MER

  4. 29. Genetic Variation and Evolution of Floral Display in Primula farinosa

    Författare :Camille Madec; Jon Ågren; Johan Ehrlén; Richard Ennos; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; natural selection; flowering time; population differentiation; local adaptation; male reproductive success;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis, I combine molecular analyses, common-garden and field experiments to examine how evolutionary and ecological processes influence patterns of genetic variation among and within populations of the declining, insect-pollinated, self-incompatible, perennial herb Primula farinosa. More specifically I examined 1) whether genetic diversity at neutral marker loci was related to habitat fragmentation and habitat stability, 2) whether floral display and flowering time were more strongly differentiated among populations than were putatively neutral marker loci, 3) whether adaptive population differentiation could be detected on a local spatial scale, and 4) whether floral display differentially affected male and female reproductive success. 5. 30. Recalling Urban Nature : Linking City People to Ecosystem Services

    Författare :Stephan Barthel; Carl Folke; Thomas Elmqvist; Johan Colding; Per Olsson; Susanne Stoll-Kleemann; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecosystem service; functional group; resilience; social-ecological system; urban; institution; property right; knowledge; sense-of-place; social-ecological memory; adaptive governance; scale-crossing broker; ecosystem management; Biology; Biologi; Natural Resources Management; naturresurshushållning;

    Sammanfattning : Societal development is dependent on the generation of ecosystem services (ES) to sustain it; however, many ES are degrading. This thesis investigates how social-ecological features behind practices of actor groups shape the generation of ES. LÄS MER
