1. Climate-induced changes : Its effects on plankton food webs from the Baltic Sea
Sammanfattning : The Earth’s climate is determined different processes occurring in the atmosphere, land and ocean.Anthropogenic activities (mainly combustion of fossil fuels) have increased since the 1950’s, andthus the concentration of greenhouse gases that are warming up the planet. LÄS MER
2. Ecological effects of pesticides in freshwater model ecosystems
Sammanfattning : In this thesis I have investigated the effects of pesticide exposure on the ecosystem level using various types of experimental ecosystems, i.e. microcosms. The direct effect of exposure to cyperemthrin, a pyretroid insecticide, was a rapid decrease of crustancean zooplankton in enclosures in a lake. LÄS MER
3. Food Quality for Zooplankton in Humic Lakes
Sammanfattning : Food quality affects growth, reproduction and community structure of zooplankton, and has implications for nutrient cycling and the transfer of energy and matter in aquatic food chains. While the issue of food quality in clear water lakes has received great recent attention, studies on food quality for zooplankton in humic lakes are scarce. LÄS MER
4. Functional diversity of zooplankton in marine food webs : Integrating DNA metabarcoding and network modeling
Sammanfattning : The oceans are important regulators of the Earth’s climate system by sequestering carbon from the atmosphere taken up by primary producers. Zooplankton, including protozoans and metazoans of different phyla and size classes, occupies several trophic niches and regulates energy flow between primary producers and fish. LÄS MER
5. The role of allelopathy in microbial food webs
Sammanfattning : Phytoplankton produce allelochemicals; excreted chemical substances that are affecting other microorganisms in their direct environment. In my thesis, I investigated strain specific variability in the expression of allelochemicals of the harmful flagellate Prymnesium parvum, that is euryhaline but mainly bloom forming in brackish water.
