1. The role of CART in islet function
Sammanfattning : Diminished insulin secretion and dysregulated glucagon secretion are key features of type 2 diabetes (T2D). The overall aim of this thesis was to study the role of cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript (CART) in islet cell function and how CART regulates glucose homeostasis. LÄS MER
2. Pituitary Adenylate Cyclase Activating Peptide (PACAP): An Experimental Study On the Expression and Regulation in the Peripheral Nervous System
Sammanfattning : This thesis deals with PACAP and PACAP type-1 receptors in the sensory and autonomic parts of the peripheral nervous system. In the rat, PACAP is expressed in small-sized sensory neurons and in C-fibers. LÄS MER
3. Expression and Regulation of Neuropeptide Y (NPY) in the Islets of Langerhans
Sammanfattning : This thesis deals with the expression, localization and regulation of neuropeptide Y (NPY) in the pancreatic islets of Langerhans under normal and experimental conditions. NPY is widely distributed in the mammalian nervous system and belongs to a family of closely related petides also comprising peptide YY (PYY) and pancreatic polypeptide (PP). LÄS MER
4. The role of cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript in endocrine cells
Sammanfattning : Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a metabolic disease characterized by insufficient insulin secretion and insulin resistance. Disturbed beta-cell function is the final culprit that leads to the development of T2D. In addition, impaired incretin effect is likely a part of the pathogenesis of T2D. LÄS MER
5. CYSTATIN C AND NEUROENDOCRINE DIFFERENTIATION IN THE MALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM AND IN PROSTATE CANCER
Sammanfattning : Cystatins are endogenous protease inhibitors that regulate the proteolytic activities of family C1 (papain-like) cysteine proteases, such as human cathepsins B, H, K, L, and S. Cystatin C shows the fastest inhibition and the highest affinity of all cystatins towards lysosomal cysteine proteases in general and is widespread in human tissues and body fluids. LÄS MER
