  1. 6. Upper and Lower Motoneuron Lesions in Tetraplegia - Diagnostic and Therapeutic Implications of Electrical Stimulation

    Författare :Ines Bersch; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Electrical stimulation; Tetraplegia; Upper motoneuron lesion; Lower motoneuron lesion; Motor point topography; Nerve transfer;

    Sammanfattning : The overall objective of this thesis was to improve outcomes and predictability of the treatment of upper extremity function in patients with cervical spinal cord injury and tetraplegia by advancing the diagnostic and therapeutic tools employed in upper and lower motor neuron lesions. An overview is presented of the current knowledge about the principles of electrical stimulation and its usefulness and proven effects on the upper limb. LÄS MER

  2. 7. Stem cells for nerve repair and prevention of muscle atrophy

    Författare :Dominique Schaakxs; Paul Kingham; Mikael Wiberg; Daniel Kalbermatten; Christine Radtke; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; adipose stem cells; biomaterial; muscle; nerve injury; neuromuscular junction; regeneration; cell research; cellforskning; Medical Cell Biology; medicinsk cellbiologi;

    Sammanfattning :   Peripheral nerve injury (PNI) is common and despite modern microsurgical techniques of repair, functional restoration is always incomplete. This results in impaired sensation and reduced motor function alongside pain and cold intolerance. LÄS MER

  3. 8. Cutaneous effects of nerve injury : An experimental study in the rat

    Författare :Nenad Stankovics; Göran Lundborg; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Sammanfattning : One of the most difficult tasks of the hand surgeon is to reach a satisfactory restoration of the nerve functions of the injuried hand. In spite of the use of meticulous microsurgery, the results of nerve repair are disappointing, particularly with respect to mixed nerve trunks. LÄS MER

  4. 9. Magnetic resonance imaging, electroneurographic, and clinical findings in Bell's palsy

    Författare :Mats Engström; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Surgery; Bell s palsy; facial nerve; magnetic resonance imaging; gadolinium; electroneurography; clinical grading; neurapraxia; nerve degeneration; prognostication; Kirurgi; Surgery; Kirurgi; Oto-Rhino-Laryngology; oto-rhino-laryngologi;

    Sammanfattning : Seventy-two patients were examined in order to learn more about the pathophysiology of Bell's palsy and to assess the value of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as well as electroneurographic and clinical tests in predicting the outcome in patients with this disease.In 12 of 20 patients (60%) an increased signal intensity in the paranasal sinuses was evident on T2-weighted MRI scans in the early stage of palsy, and in six of the positive patients the high signal intensity had disappeared by the time of the follow-up examination. 5. 10. Intracranial facial nerve lesion : experimental study on neural degeneration and its treatment

    Författare :Per Mattsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to develop an experimental model that would generate extensive motor neuronal degeneration in adult rats, and furthermore to study mechanisms causing nerve cell death and effects of putative neuroprotective compounds. The facial nerve was chosen because it is well characterized and allows evaluation of functional recovery by analyzing vibrissae movements. LÄS MER
