  1. 1. Strategies for remediation of very large deposits of mine waste : the Aitik mine, Northern Sweden

    Författare :Manfred Lindvall; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Applied Geology; Tillämpad geologi;

    Sammanfattning : The Aitik mine, near Gällivare in Sweden, is the largest copper mine in Europe with an annual production exceeding 18 Mt of ore. After processing of the ore the residual waste material, so called tailings, are deposited in a tailings pond. In addition, 15 - 25 Mt of barren waste rock is mined annually in order to provide access to the ore. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Geochemical and Mineralogical Characterization of Waste Rocks for Preliminary Mine Drainage Quality Prediction

    Författare :Teemu Karlsson; Lena Alakangas; Päivi Kauppila; Berndt Lottermoser; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Mine waste characterisation; mine drainage water; ARD; NRD; aqua regia extraction; ABA test; NAG test; SEM mineralogy; sulfide minerals; risk assessment; Applied Geochemistry; Tillämpad geokemi;

    Sammanfattning : Acid or neutral rock drainage (ARD or NRD) with its attendant elevated concentrations of harmful elements presents one of the main challenges related to the management of waste rocks. Low-quality drainage is a particular issue with respect to mineral deposits containing sulfide minerals, of which pyrite and pyrrhotite are especially prone to produce acidic drainage when exposed to oxygen and water. 3. 3. Metals released from mine waste deposits : Redistribution and fluxes through geological barriers

    Författare :Karsten Håkansson; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH AREAS; TVÄRVETENSKAPLIGA FORSKNINGSOMRÅDEN;

    Sammanfattning : The redistribution of metals from point sources (sulphidic mine waste) is presented in this thesis. The impact on surface water systems is determined from water quality and sediment data. It is generally found that lakes act as sinks for the metals, to a different extent for eachmetal. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Utilization of waste materials for extraction of strategic metals : a biogeochemical approach

    Författare :Viktor Sjöberg; Stefan Karlsson; Bert Allard; Mattias Bäckström; Christian Ekberg; Örebro universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; biogeochemistry; ICP-QMS; MP AES; strategic metals; vanadium; uranium; mine waste; steel slag; shale residues; Enviromental Science; Miljövetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : Worldwide the modern society produces vast amounts of waste materials containing strategic and valuable metals. Some of them are of substantial economic or environmental significance if controlled recovery of metals can be performed or if uncontrolled release to the environment occurs. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Environmental aspects of coal mine drainage: a regional study of Moatize in Mozambique

    Författare :Estevao Pondja; Avdelningen för Teknisk vattenresurslära; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; coal mining; acid mine drainage; mine water treatment; climate change; low-cost adsorbent;

    Sammanfattning : Mozambique is one of the largest coal producers in Africa. Extraction of the coal is carried out in the Moatize district of the Tete province in the center of the country. A surface mining technique is used to extract the coal below ground level. LÄS MER
