  1. 21. Light’EM up! : structural characterization of light-driven membrane protein complexes by cryogenic electron microscopy

    Författare :André Tomás Graça; Wolfgang P. Schröder; Johannes Messinger; Karina Persson; Werner Kühlbrandt; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; 3D reconstruction; Arabidopsis thaliana; assembly; chlorophyll; cryo-EM; cyanobacteria; Deinococus radiodurans; electron; land plants; membrane protein complexes; Photosystem II; proton; single-particle analysis; S-Layer Deinoxanthin Binding Complex SDBC ; water.; Biochemistry; biokemi; biologisk kemi; biological chemistry;

    Sammanfattning : Photosynthesis is probably the most important process for allowing life to develop into the diverse forms we see today. In this process, solar radiation is used to convert CO2 into biomass. From this process, we obtain oxygen to breathe, sources of food (plant biomass), and the potential for clean and sustainable energy. LÄS MER

  2. 22. Ecological interactions in human modified landscapes : Landscape dependent remedies for the maintenance of biodiversity and ecosystem services

    Författare :Arvid Bolin; Biodiversitet; []
    Nyckelord :Central place foraging; Agriculture; Competition; Ecosystem service; Species coexistence; bumble bees; landscape ecology; Biodiversity; Agri-environment scheme; Central place foraging; jordbruk; konkurrens; landskaps ekologi; humlor; bin;

    Sammanfattning : Modern agricultural practices have led to an intensification of the agricultural landscape which has negatively affected both biodiversity and the ecosystem services it provides. In my thesis I have used ecological theory of optimal foraging to try and explain how landscape structure, landscape composition and agricultural management can explain the loss of biodiversity and how remedies can efficiently be implemented. 3. 23. Through the eyes of a woodpecker: Understanding habitat selection, territory quality and reproductive decisions from individual behaviour

    Författare :Ola Olsson; Biodiversitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; reproductive success; territory quality; habitat selection; giving-up density; Bayesian processes; foraging; Picidae; lesser spotted woodpecker; Dendrocopos minor; conservation; Animal ecology; Djurekologi;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis I present some connections between foraging behaviour and reproductive success, time budget, tree species use, and habitat selection. The thesis is based upon both theoretical and empirical work. All empirical studies concern a south Swedish population of lesser spotted woodpeckers Dendrocopos minor, studied between 1990 and 1996. 4. 24. Miniaturised Bioanalytical Chemistry in Acoustically Levitated Droplets

    Författare :Sabina Santesson; Centrum för analys och syntes; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Analytical chemistry; Analytisk kemi; protein crystallisation; affinity two-phase partitioning; single cell analysis; bioanalytical chemistry; airborne chemistry; levitated droplets; Miniaturisation; acoustic levitation;

    Sammanfattning : Fuelled by the current demands of the biological sciences, there is today a growing interest in microscale analysis. Miniaturisation of analytical instruments has become a long-standing trend. Miniaturisation offers several advantages, including rapid separation times, high performance and throughput, reduced costs, etc. LÄS MER

  5. 25. Large-Scale Land Acquisitions as a Driver of Socio-Environmental Change : From the Pixel to the Globe

    Författare :Emma Johansson; Institutionen för naturgeografi och ekosystemvetenskap; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Land system sience; socio-environmental change; telecoupling; scale; co-production of knowledge; participatory art project; network science; blue and green water; Africa; Land grabbing; Remote sensing;

    Sammanfattning : A major challenge of our time is to sustainably produce food and other goods for a growing global population, without putting additional pressures on land and water resources and local people’s quality of life. Large-scale agriculture has brought many benefits to humanity in terms of food production but has also caused multiple sustainability challenges, including land and water degradation, deforestation, and biodiversity loss in areas of production.
