  1. 1. Through the eyes of a woodpecker: Understanding habitat selection, territory quality and reproductive decisions from individual behaviour

    Författare :Ola Olsson; Biodiversitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; reproductive success; territory quality; habitat selection; giving-up density; Bayesian processes; foraging; Picidae; lesser spotted woodpecker; Dendrocopos minor; conservation; Animal ecology; Djurekologi;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis I present some connections between foraging behaviour and reproductive success, time budget, tree species use, and habitat selection. The thesis is based upon both theoretical and empirical work. All empirical studies concern a south Swedish population of lesser spotted woodpeckers Dendrocopos minor, studied between 1990 and 1996. 2. 2. Living in a Variable Environment : Reproductive Decisions in Wild Bird Populations

    Författare :Mårten B. Hjernquist; Lars Gustafsson; Marcel Visser; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; evolutionary ecology; competition; sex allocation; paternity; EPP; inadvertent social information; migration; breeding density; territory quality; territory availability; great tit; blue tit; Ficedula albicollis; Biology; Biologi; Animal Ecology; zooekologi;

    Sammanfattning : In nature, environments are often variable and heterogeneous influencing ecological and evolutionary processes. This thesis focus on how animals interact with their environment and how that affects the reproductive decisions they make. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Making motherhood safe in the West Bank, occupied Palestinian territory

    Författare :Nadim Al-Adili; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :West Bank; reproductive deaths; maternal mortality; avoidability; verbal autopsy; quality of care; women s status; violence against women; Orphans survival; gender; death notification and registration; Occupied Palestinian Territory.;

    Sammanfattning : Objective: To determine causes of death among women of reproductive age; to determine MMR; to review death notification and registration procedures, and to examine the fate and status of under-5 motherless orphans in the West Bank. Methods: All reported deaths (n= 431) of women 15-49 years old during 2000-2001 in the West Bank area of OPT were investigated. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Influence of Mate Quality on Reproductive Decisions in a Fish with Paternal Care

    Författare :Niclas Kolm; Anders Berglund; Ben Sheldon; Kai Lindström; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; sexual selection; differential allocation; evolution of egg size and parental care; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : Female reproductive decisions have been suggested to be highly influenced by mate quality. I have studied whether offspring quality may be adjusted by females to match the attractiveness of males and how strong control females have over their reproductive investment focusing on egg size. 5. 5. METHODS FOR TRANSBOUNDARY WATER RESOURCES MANAGEMENT IN WATER STRESSED REGIONS – CASE STUDY: SOUTHERN AFRICA

    Författare :Dinis Juizo; Avdelningen för Teknisk vattenresurslära; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; river basin simulation; water quality monitoring; stakeholders involvement; Southern Africa; South Africa; Mozambique; transboundary water systems; Swaziland;

    Sammanfattning : Water resources management in water scarce regions like the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) is challenging with both large hydro-climatic-induced scarcity and the considerable inter-annual fluctuations at the centre of the allocation problem. Water must be allocated both in time and space using acceptable criteria and most importantly, all stakeholders must adhere to the decisions imposed by water sharing agreements. LÄS MER
