  1. 16. Evolutionary Dynamics of Mutation and Gene Transfer in Bacteria

    Författare :Peter A Lind; Dan I Andersson; J. Arjan G. M. de Visser; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; fitness cost; bacterial evolution; gene amplification; mutational biases; GC content; synonymous substitutions; horizontal gene transfer; experimental evolution; Bacteriology; Bakteriologi; Microbiology; Mikrobiologi; Genetics; Genetik; Biology; Biologi; Mikrobiologi; Microbiology;

    Sammanfattning : The study of bacterial evolution is fundamental for addressing current problems of antibiotic resistance and emerging infectious diseases and lays a solid foundation for successful and rational design in biotechnology and synthetic biology. The main aim of this thesis is to test evolutionary hypotheses, largely based on theoretical considerations and sequence analysis, by designing scenarios in a laboratory setting to obtain experimental data. 2. 17. Antibiotic interactions and selection for resistance in biofilms

    Författare :Po-Cheng Tang; Dan I. Andersson; Karin Hjort; Mark Webber; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; antibiotics; Mikrobiologi; Microbiology;

    Sammanfattning : The challenges posed by antibiotic-resistant bacteria in treating infections, particularly those associated with biofilms, require a deeper understanding of this lifestyle and its connection to resistance selection. Additionally, gaining insights into drug interactions is crucial for enhancing combination treatment efficacy and mitigating resistance development. LÄS MER

  3. 18. Pathogenesis and Cell Biology of the Salmon Parasite Spironucleus salmonicida

    Författare :Ásgeir Ástvaldsson; Staffan Svärd; Jon Jerlström-Hultqvist; Scott Dawson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Diplomonads; Spironucleus; Giardia; genome; annexin; oxygen stress; APEX; pathology;

    Sammanfattning : Spironucleus species are classified as diplomonad organisms, diverse eukaryotic flagellates found in oxygen-deprived environments. Members of Spironucleus are parasitic and can infect a variety of hosts, such as mice and birds, while the majority are found to infect fish. LÄS MER

  4. 19. Identification of protease inhibitors against Flaviviruses and Coronaviruses

    Författare :Dario Akaberi; Åke Lundkvist; Johan Lennerstrand; Josef D. Järhult; Ujjwal Neogi; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Antiviral research; protease inhibitors; flaviviruses; coronaviruses; ZIKV; TBEV; SARS-CoV-2;

    Sammanfattning : Vector-borne flaviviruses and coronaviruses of zoonotic origins are important human pathogens and represent a serious threat to public health worldwide. Flaviviruses can be found on all continents, apart from Antarctica, where they are transmitted by arthropod vectors causing millions of infections every year. LÄS MER

  5. 20. Characterization of Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli water isolates

    Författare :Anna Nilsson; Hilpi Rautelin; Astrid Skarp; Cecilia Johansson; Mikael Skurnik; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; C. jejuni; C. coli; C.coli clade 2; C. coli clade 3; waterborne pathogens; whole genome sequencing; water survival; pathogenic potential; phenotypical identification; Klinisk bakteriologi; Clinical Bacteriology; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science;

    Sammanfattning : Campylobacter jejuni and C. coli are together the most common cause of bacterial gastroenteritis in the European Union. Campylobacter can be transmitted to humans via contaminated water, but it is largely unknown how these bacteria survive in water. LÄS MER
