  1. 21. Immunological, vascular and metabolic actions of androgens

    Författare :Marta Lantero Rodriguez; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; androgens; androgen receptor; immune system; atherosclerosis; abdominal aortic aneurysm; brown fat; mice;

    Sammanfattning : Men have higher prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) but lower risk of autoimmune disorders than women. The actions of sex steroids may be involved in the sexual dimorphism of these diseases. Although testosterone, the main androgen, seems to protect against autoimmunity, its role in CVD is contradictory and disease-dependent. LÄS MER

  2. 22. Hormonal mechanisms of menstrual disturbances, metabolic disorders and effects of oral contraceptives in female athletes

    Författare :Anette Rickenlund; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Female athletes; athletic amenorrhea; polycystic ovary syndrome; body composition; bone mineral density; endothelial function; physical performance; oral contraceptives;

    Sammanfattning : Background: During the last decades the number of women participating in sports has increased dramatically. Although exercise has beneficial health effects for most of these women, we now realize that strenuous exercise may also have serious medical consequences. Menstrual dysfunction is common among athletes and the exact mechanisms are not known. LÄS MER

  3. 23. Dietary inorganic nitrate : role in exercise physiology, cardiovascular and metabolic regulation

    Författare :Filip J. Larsen; Jon Lundberg; Eddie Weitzberg; Björn Ekblom; Victor M Darley-Usmar; Gymnastik- och idrottshögskolan; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Medicin Teknik; Medicine Technology;

    Sammanfattning : Nitric oxide (NO) is a ubiquitous signaling molecule with a vast number of tasks in the body, including regulation of cardiovascular and metabolic function. A decreased bioavailability of NO is a central event in disorders such as hypertension and metabolic syndrome. LÄS MER

  4. 24. Molecular genetic studies of three autosomal recessive disorders : Sjögren-Larsson syndrome, glutathione synthetase deficiency and congenital ichthyosis

    Författare :Maritta Pigg; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Genetics; Sjögren-Larsson syndrome; glutathione synthetase deficiency; congenital ichthyosis; linkage analysis; allelic association; mutation analysis; transglutaminase 1 gene; Genetik; Clinical genetics; Klinisk genetik; Clinical Genetics; klinisk genetik;

    Sammanfattning : Investigations at the DNA level were performed in order to characterise the molecular basis forthree genetic disorders:Sjögren-Larsson syndrome (SLS) is characterised by congenital ichthyosis and severeneurological symptoms. Linkage analysis and allelic association of 24 Swedish families affectedby SLS showed linkage between the disease and the marker D17S805 on chromosome 17. LÄS MER

  5. 25. Metabolic and pharmacokinetic study to enhance busulphan therapeutic efficacy

    Författare :Fadwa Benkessou; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Busulphan (Bu) is an alkylating agent used in high-doses as part of the conditioning regimen prior to hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). HSCT is a curative treatment for hematological malignancies and other disorders. Bu can be administered by oral or intravenous route. LÄS MER
