21. Shadows and light : examining community mental health competence in North India
Sammanfattning : BackgroundGlobally, there is increasing emphasis on the importance of understanding the ways in which social inequality and injustice impact individual and community mental health. Set in the states of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, India, this thesis examines the complex relationships between individuals, communities and the social environment in relation to mental health. 22. The Light-up Probe
Sammanfattning : The work presented in this thesis concerns the development of light-up probes and their potential applications in PCR based molecular diagnostics. The light-up probe is a nucleic acid analog (here PNA) oligomer linked to an asymmetric cyanine dye (here thiazole orange) and it combines the excellent hybridization properties of PNA with the large fluorescence enhancement of the dye upon binding to DNA. 23. Polymer Light Emitting Devices : A study on how the electrode-polymer interface affects the performance of polymer light emitting devices
Sammanfattning : The research reported in this thesis is concerned with a new type of semiconductor device that can be realised by using thin films of semiconducting polymers, or conjugated polymers. In this thesis only one family of these conjugated polymers is studied, namely poly-(para-phenylene vinylene) and derivatives thereof. LÄS MER
24. Light scattering and absorption in tissue - models and measurements
Sammanfattning : In this work a number of theoretical models, describing light propagation in matter, have been applied to and developed for the examination of tissue. The aim was to model the light scattering and absorption in tissue in order to improve the understanding of underlying mechanisms of laser-based diagnostics and treatment modalities utilised for cancer and cardiovascular diseases. 25. Mathematical Modelling of Light Scattering in Paper and Print
Sammanfattning : A problem formulation and a solution method are outlined for the radiative transfer problem in vertically inhomogeneous scattering and absorbing media, using discrete ordinate model geometry. The treatment spans from the physical problem via a continuous formulation, a discretization and a numerical analysis, to an implementation with performance evaluation and application to real-world problems.
