6. Alternative techniques in trochanteric hip fracture surgery. Clinical and biomechanical studies on the Medoff sliding plate and the Twin hook
Sammanfattning : In allowing compression along the femoral shaft (uniaxial dynamization) and optional compression along the femoral neck (biaxial dynamization), the Medoff sliding plate (MSP) represents a new principle in the fixation of trochanteric hip fractures. The Twin hook with 2 apical hooks was designed as an alternative to the lag screw. LÄS MER
7. Tibial shaft fractures : An epidemiological and clinical study
Sammanfattning : The epidemiological features of tibial shaft fractures were studied in Uppsala during two 5-year periods. The incidence decreased in men below 20 years of age in the late 1980's compared with the early 1970's (mostly due to a reduction of fractures sustained in traffic accidents), while the incidence increased in women over 80. 8. Proximal femoral fractures : functional outcome, quality of life and mortality
Sammanfattning : A hip fracture in the elderly is one of the most devastating consequences of osteoporosis and has a high rate of complications, including death and a serious threat to the patient s future mobility, social functioning, quality of life and autonomy. The aim of this thesis was to gain a better knowledge of the functional outcome after treatment with an intramedullary (proximal femoral nail;PFN) or an extramedullary (Medoff sliding plate; MSP) fixation device in patients with unstable trochanteric and subtrochanteric fractures. 9. Complications in trochanteric and subtrochanteric femoral fractures
Sammanfattning : The hip fracture is a major public health problem. The majority of hip fracture patients are elderly with comorbidities and there is a strong association with osteoporosis, especially for the extracapsular (trochanteric and subtrochanteric) types of fractures. LÄS MER
10. Atypical femoral fractures: Another brick in the wall : On aspects of healing, treatment strategies and surveillance
Sammanfattning : Atypical femoral fractures are stress fractures of the femoral subtrochanteric and diaphyseal region. It is a common notion that these fractures heal poorly, if at all. In this thesis we show that patients with atypical femoral fractures have a good capacity to generate bone and therefore heal fractures. LÄS MER
