11. Ion channels and electrical activity in vascular smooth muscle: Effects of calcium store depletion, cholesterol and cholesterol-lowering drugs
Sammanfattning : Smooth muscle cells (SMCs) in the vessel wall contract to regulate blood flow and pressure, a function essential for normal circulation through tissues. On the other hand, migration and proliferation of SMCs are important factors in vascular disease, such as atherosclerosis and restenosis following surgical dilatation. LÄS MER
12. Regulation of Attachment and Early Intracellular Development of Chlamydia trachomatis in Eucaryotic Cells
Sammanfattning : The obligate intracellular bacterium, Chlamydia trachomatis , a common human pathogen, causing different diseases in both males and females, as well as in infants born to infected mothers. Occasionally, these diseases involve serious complications, such as blindness and infertility. C. LÄS MER
13. Metabolic signals in the regulation of insulin release
Sammanfattning : In the present thesis, an attempt was made to elucidate the role of some of the glucose-induced intracellular metabolic effector signals in insulin secretion and to develop new applications that will enable further investigations of oscillatory signalling and secretion from pancreatic ß-cells. The sequence of early metabolic and ionic events was examined in clonal pancreatic insulin secreting cells (HIT) in response to glucose stimulation. LÄS MER
14. Parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP), calcium and human osteoblast-like cells
Sammanfattning : Parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP) may cause humoral hypercalcernia of malignancy (HHM) when overproduced by malignant tumors, but is also produced in lower amounts under normophysiological conditions in practically all cell types, including osteoblasts. One of the aims of the present study was to investigate interactions between PTHrP and osteoblasts, to elucidate bone-regulating functions of PTHrP. LÄS MER
15. Mechanisms regulating ion transport in the secretory epithelia of the inner ear : an experimental study
Sammanfattning : The apical portions of the cells in the sensory end organs for audition and equilibrium border a fluid called endolymph. Endolymph is the only extracellular fluid in the body which is characterized by an intracellular-like ion composition. LÄS MER
