  1. 1. Cell death and signal transduction pathways in Alzheimer's disease : the role of presenilin 1

    Författare :Bogdan O Popescu; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Mutated presenilins (PSs) may cause familial Alzheimer's disease (FAD) by altering neuronal signal transduction pathways, by increasing AP production or by triggering a number of proapoptotic mechanisms. The present thesis explores mechanisms by which PSs regulate signal transduction and cell death with relevance to AD. LÄS MER

  2. 2. The Role of Protein Kinase C in the Extracellular Ca2+-regulated Secretion of Parathyroid Hormone

    Författare :Amos M. Sakwe; Lars Rask; Claes Juhlin; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Medical sciences; parathyroid hormone; Ca2 ; protein kinase C; calcium sensing receptor; ERK1 2; biosynthesis; secretion; MEDICIN OCH VÅRD; MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Sammanfattning : Parathyroid hormone (PTH) is the major physiological regulator of the extracellular Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]o) in the body. The secretion of this hormone is suppressed at high [Ca2+]o. LÄS MER

  3. 3. On Cholecystokinin and Phospholipase A2 in Insulin Secretion - an Experimental Study With Reference to the Development of Diabetes

    Författare :Erik Simonsson; Malmö Institutionen för kliniska vetenskaper; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Type 2 Diabetes; Insulin Resistance; Islet; Beta-cell; Insulin Secretion; Ca2 -Dependency; Intracellular Signalling; Phospholipase A2; Cholecystokinin; Non-glucose Secretagogues; Endocrinology; secreting systems; diabetology; Endokrinologi; sekretion; diabetologi;

    Sammanfattning : In view of unsolved issues regarding cellular events underlying the adaptation of insulin secretion to insulin resistance, together with the observation that insulin secretion induced by the gastrointestinal hormone and neuropeptide cholecystokinin (CCK) is not solely explained by phospholipase C-protein kinase C (PLC-PKC) pathway activation, this study aimed at delineate mechanisms responsible for the hyperinsulinemia in insulin resistance, with particular attention paid to the action of glucose vs. non-glucose secretagogues, such as CCK. 4. 4. Ethanol-mediated effects on astroglial cells in primary culture. With a focus on acute changes in intracellular Ca2+, cell volume, actin filaments, and gap junction coupling

    Författare :Louise Adermark; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; astrocyte; BaCl2; cell swelling; fura-2; furosemide; ouabain; scrape loading; volume estimation;

    Sammanfattning : The astroglial cells are abundant in the central nervous system (CNS), where they control and regulate the homeostasis of the extracellular milieu. A change in astroglial cell volume, mediated through activation of neuroactive substances or changes in osmolarity, leads to changes in the size and geometry of the extracellular space volume, which could affect the diffusion and concentration of neuroactive substances. 5. 5. Parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP), calcium and human osteoblast-like cells

    Författare :Jon A Tsai; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :hOB cells; PTHrP; cAMP; IGFs; IGFBPs; IL-1ß; TGF-ß; [Ca 2 ]i; [Ca2 ]O;

    Sammanfattning : Parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP) may cause humoral hypercalcernia of malignancy (HHM) when overproduced by malignant tumors, but is also produced in lower amounts under normophysiological conditions in practically all cell types, including osteoblasts. One of the aims of the present study was to investigate interactions between PTHrP and osteoblasts, to elucidate bone-regulating functions of PTHrP. LÄS MER
