  1. 6. Tobacco use and dependence : does it originate in utero?

    Författare :Mina Rydell; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Prenatal nicotine exposure (such as from maternal smoking during pregnancy) has been hypothesized to cause a so called programming effect, where epigenetic changes might result in a long-lasting vulnerability to tobacco use and dependence, manifesting during adolescence or young adulthood. However, previous observational studies show mixed results, perhaps because the association could be influenced by a common genetic predisposition to tobacco use as well as by social factors influencing both parental tobacco use during pregnancy and tobacco use in the offspring. 2. 7. Experimental studies of human fetal liver cells : in regard to in utero hematopoietic stem cell transplantation

    Författare :Bim Lindton; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :In utero transplantation; fetal liver cells; mixed lymphocyte culture; CD3; CD56; HLA class II; parvovirus B 19 capsids; corticosteroids; cytotoxic drugs; colony formation.;

    Sammanfattning : Successful in utero hematopoietic stem cell transplantation represents a potential step forward in the management of patients with severe inherited hematological, metabolic and immunological disorders. Animal data from a number of species have demonstrated evidence of engraftment, but to date the only effective in utero transplantations (IUTx) in humans have been performed in fetuses with severe immunodeficiencies, suggesting that the fetal immune system play a vital role in the success or failure of in utero transplantation. 3. 8. Exposures in utero and chronic disease : an alternative methodological approach

    Författare :Anna Hübinette; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Cardiovascular disease; acute myocardial infarction; angina pectoris; breast neoplasms; birth weight; birth anthropometrics; twin study; epidemiology; etiology; risk factors; insulin-like growth factors; preeclampsia; longitudinal study.;

    Sammanfattning : The aims of this thesis were to evaluate maternal and birth characteristics as risk factors for breast cancer and cardiovascular disease later in life, and to assess maternal serum concentrations of insulin-like growth factors in pregnancies complicated by preeclampsia. Birth characteristics and risks of breast cancer were studied in a case-control study nested within the population-based Swedish Twin Register (Paper 1). LÄS MER

  4. 9. Consequences of Poor Housing : Essays on Urban and Health Economics

    Författare :Fredrik Hansson; Matz Dahlberg; Che-Yuan Liang; Aline Bütikofer; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Urban; health; education; in utero; pollution; radiation; uranium; radon; housing prices; happiness; well-being; urbanization; growth; Economics; Nationalekonomi;

    Sammanfattning : Essay I: Research shows that low fetal doses of radiation from nuclear catastrophes and atmospheric test bombings of nuclear weapons cause cognitive birth defects. These events are uncommon and the radioactive isotopes they create rarely reach harmful levels in nature. LÄS MER

  5. 10. Immune regulation during pregnancy in relation to allergy and in women undergoing in vitro fertilization

    Författare :Marie Persson; Maria Jenmalm; Göran Berg; Christina Ekerfelt; Lucia Mincheva-Nilsson; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : During pregnancy, the fetus expresses both maternal and paternal antigens. To the mother, the paternal antigens are foreign, providing her immune system with an interesting challenge. The fact that the fetus is not normally attacked and rejected implies that mechanisms of tolerance must exist. LÄS MER
