6. Temporomandibular joint pain, hyperalgesia and allodynia in relation to interleukin-1ß and serotonin
Sammanfattning : This thesis had two main aims and comprises a methodological and a clinical part. The aims were to develop a temporomandibular joint (TMJ) synovial fluid (SF) sampling method that enables the determination of the true SF level of various substances and, by using the developed TMJ SF sampling method, investigate the hypothesis that circulating as well as SF content of interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß) and serotonin (5-HT) influence different TMJ pain entities and signs of tissue destruction in patients with TMJ inflammatory disorders. 7. Experimental and clinical studies on adenosine receptor stimulation in cutaneous hypersensitivity and neuropathic pain
Sammanfattning : The endogenous compound adenosine (ADO) has a wide range of physiological effects. Numerous animal studies and a limited number of human studies have shown antinociceptive effects of ADO and its analogues. The spinal cord dorsal column, where ADO receptors are found in high numbers, is a major site of action for this effect. LÄS MER
8. Human experimental pain models : methodological and analgesic studies
Sammanfattning : Pain is an important clinical issue with great impact on society and individuals' well being. It is well established that sensory abnormalities induced by tissue trauma and inflammation are clinically important in various acute and chronic pain conditions. LÄS MER
9. The Impact of the Neuropeptide Substance P (SP) Fragment SP1-7 on Chronic Neuropathic Pain
Sammanfattning : There is an unmet medical need for the efficient treatment of neuropathic pain, a condition that affects approximately 10% of the population worldwide. Current therapies need to be improved due to the associated side effects and lack of response in many patients. LÄS MER
10. Neuropeptides in temporomandibular joint arthritis
Sammanfattning : Involvement of the peripheral and central nervous systems in the pathophysiology of arthritis has been suggested and neuropeptides are thought to participate in the mediation and modulation of the inflammatory process. The main objective of the clinical studies was to investigate the relationship between the presence of neuropeptides in the synovial fluid of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and the stomatognathic symptoms and signs, including the intra-articular temperature (IAT), in patients with TMJ arthritis.
