16. Early parathyroidectomy in mild primary hyperparathyroidism: Effects on heart and bones
Sammanfattning : There is an ongoing controversy regarding how to take care of patients with mild primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT). Some recommend surgical treatment at diagnosis, others just follow-up as long as there is no evidence of disease progression. LÄS MER
17. Risk factors for falls and fractures in elderly women. The Malmö OPRA study
Sammanfattning : Approximately half of all women will sustain a fracture after the age of 50. Fractures may cause long-term disability and excess mortality. Identifying individuals at high risk of sustaining a fracture is important in the development of primary and secondary prevention strategies. LÄS MER
18. Alternative techniques in trochanteric hip fracture surgery. Clinical and biomechanical studies on the Medoff sliding plate and the Twin hook
Sammanfattning : In allowing compression along the femoral shaft (uniaxial dynamization) and optional compression along the femoral neck (biaxial dynamization), the Medoff sliding plate (MSP) represents a new principle in the fixation of trochanteric hip fractures. The Twin hook with 2 apical hooks was designed as an alternative to the lag screw. LÄS MER
19. Treatment of unstable trochanteric hip fractures : A clinical, mechanical and radiographic evaluation of the RAB-plate
Sammanfattning : The problems associated with the management of proximal femoral fractures gain more attention as the elderly population continue to increase. It has been estimated that the total number of hip fractures in the world will increase from 1.7 million per year in 1990 to 6.3 million per year in 2050 (Cooper et al 1992). LÄS MER
20. Changes in bone mass and skeletal structure in the postmenopausal period
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to evaluate long-term changes in bone mass and skeletal structure in the forearm in the peri- and postmenopausal period. 156 premenopausal women, at baseline aged 48 years, not taking medications and without disease processes known to interfere with bone metabolism, were followed through menopause by measurements of bone mass and skeletal structure at the cortical site of the distal radius by single photon absorptiometry, on average every second year until age 72.
