  1. 6. Glucose and insulin modulate phagocytosis and production of reactive oxygen metabolites in human neutrophil granulocytes

    Författare :Daniel Saiepour; Per-Arne Oldenborg; Janove Sehlin; Olle Stendahl; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; neutrophil granulocytes; glucose; insulin; protein kinase C; diacylglycerol; phagocytosis; respiratory burst; diabetes; Histology; Histologi;

    Sammanfattning : Neutrophil granulocytes play an important role in the host defence against invading microorganisms and constitute the frontline of defence within the innate immune system and are among the first cells to arrive at the site of inflammation. Effective phagocytosis and killing of invading pathogens by neutrophils is of significant importance for successful resistance to infectious diseases. LÄS MER

  2. 7. Perinatal Energy Substrate Metabolism : Glucose Production and Lipolysis in Pregnant Women and Newborn Infants with Particular Reference to Intrauterine Growth Restriction (IUGR)

    Författare :Barbro Diderholm; Jan Gustafsson; Uwe Ewald; Olle Söder; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pediatrics; Lipolysis; Glucose; Newborn infant; Pregnant women; IUGR; Insulin; Stable isotopes; Pediatrik; Paediatric medicine; Pediatrisk medicin;

    Sammanfattning : Glucose is the most important fetal nutrient and the production of this substrate increases in the pregnant woman. In the last trimester the increased insulin resistance directs energy substrates to the fetus. Fetal growth is sometimes disturbed, often without an obvious explanation. LÄS MER

  3. 8. Insights into the metabolism of Clostridium thermocellum for cellulosic ethanol production

    Författare :Johannes Yayo; Antonius J. A. van Maris; Richard Sparling; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Clostridium thermocellum; ethanol; glucose; fructose; amino acids; pyrophosphate; chaotropicity; thermodynamic driving force; laboratory evolution; chemostats; metabolic engineering; Biotechnology; Bioteknologi;

    Sammanfattning : The societal goal of reaching net-zero CO2 emissions requires development of integrated biorefineries to produce biomass-derived fuels and chemicals. For sustainable second-generation bioethanol production, consolidated bioprocessing with the thermophile Clostridium thermocellum is regarded as a promising concept in view of the microorganism’s native ability to efficiently degrade plant cell wall material. 4. 9. Exploration of Conditions Affecting Cytokine Production in Experimental Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus

    Författare :Lina Thorvaldson; Stellan Sandler; Michael Welsh; Maria Holstad; Maria Faresjö; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Cell biology; Cytokine; Diabetes; Tumor necrosis factor-α; Interferon-γ; Interleukin-4; Interleukin-10; Transplantation; Pancreatic islet; Glucose; Regulatory T cell; Cellbiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Cytokines are soluble signalling mediators within the immune system, and have been shown to be of importance in the development of type 1 diabetes (T1D). This thesis studied the production of cytokines in experimental models of T1D and during transplantation of insulin-producing islets of Langerhans. LÄS MER

  5. 10. Ethanol Production from Lignocellulosic Materials: Potential of Continuous Cultivation, Immobilisation, and Zygomycetous Fungi

    Författare :Ria Millati; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; continuous cultivation; galactose; Rhizopus; xylose; Rhizomucor; S cerevisiae; Mucor; M indicus; glucose; immobilisation; detoxification; arabinose; mannose; overliming; ethanol; dilute-acid hydrolysate;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis deals with the production of bio-ethanol, a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels, from dilute-acid lignocellulosic hydrolysate in a continuous immobilised cell system and fermentation of the hydrolysate by a zygomycete organism, M. indicus. LÄS MER
