  2. 2. Role of Inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase and Melatonin in Regulation of β-cell Sensitivity to Cytokines

    Författare :Annika K. Andersson; Stellan Sandler; Nils Welsh; Décio L. Eizirik; Nils Billestrup; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cell biology; β-cell; Cyclooxygenase; Cytokine; Diabetes; IFN-γ; IL-1β; iNOS; Insulin; Melatonin; Nitric oxide; Pancreatic islets; Phospholipase D; Prostaglandin E2; Streptozotocin; Cellbiologi; Cell biology; Cellbiologi;

    Sammanfattning : The mechanisms of β-cell destruction leading to type 1 diabetes are complex and not yet fully understood, but infiltration of the islets of Langerhans by autoreactive immune cells is believed to be important. Activated macrophages and T-cells may then secrete cytokines and free radicals, which could selectively damage the β-cells. LÄS MER

  3. 3. The bank vole (Myodes glareolus) – a novel animal model for the study of diabetes mellitus

    Författare :Martin Blixt; Stellan Sandler; Johnny Ludvigsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Bank vole; pancreatic islets; diabetes mellitus; hydropic degeneration; proinflammatory cytokine; Diabetology; Diabetologi; Endocrinology; Endokrinologi; Medical Cell Biology; Medicinsk cellbiologi;

    Sammanfattning : The bank vole (Microtus arvalis) develops glucose intolerance both when kept in captivity and in the wild state. Glucose intolerant bank voles kept in captivity exhibited polydipsia, polyuria, hyperglycemia, hyperinsulinemia, islet autoantibodies and a markedly changed islet structure resembling so–called hydropic degeneration. 4. 4. Microencapsulation of Pancreatic Islets : A Non-Vascularised Transplantation Model

    Författare :Sara Bohman; Arne Andersson; Aileen King; Stellan Sandler; Eduard Montanya; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Microencapsulation; Islet transplantation; revascularisation; alpha-cell; exendin-4; islet amyloid; Cell biology; Cellbiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Transplantation of pancreatic islets is a potential treatment of type 1 diabetes that aims to restore normal blood glucose control. By encapsulating the islets in alginate, they can be protected from rejection. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Investigations of Strategies to Counteract Proinflammatory Cytokines in Experimental Type 1 Diabetes

    Författare :Andreas Börjesson; Stellan Sandler; Annika Carlsson; Jens Nielsen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; Type 1 diabetes; proinflammatory cytokines; SOCS-3; pancreatic islets; inducible nitric oxide synthase; insulin secretion; NOD mice; islet transplantation; proinsulin conversion; streptozotocin; prolactin; Medicine; Medicin;

    Sammanfattning : Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a chronic autoimmune disease targeted against the pancreatic β-cells. Proinflammatory cytokines are considered to play a major role in the destruction of the insulin-producing β-cells. This thesis studied strategies to counteract proinflammatory cytokines in experimental T1D. LÄS MER
