17. Studies of plant interactions with other organisms to understand Bacillus mediated stress management
Sammanfattning : The naturally evolved plant defense system is not always effective, due to adaptations among the attackers. Crop protective chemicals have many negative effects on the environment. Ecosystem services, like beneficial microorganisms, are of great interest for plant stress management in sustainable crop production. LÄS MER
18. Life History and Tolerance and Resistance against Herbivores in Natural Populations of Arabidopsis thaliana
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, I combined observational studies with field and greenhouse experiments to examine selection on life history traits and variation in tolerance and resistance against herbivores in natural populations of the annual herb Arabidopsis thaliana in its native range. I investigated (1) phenotypic selection on flowering time and plant size, (2) the effects of timing of germination on plant fitness, (3) the effect of leaf damage on seed production, and (4) correlations between resistance against a specialist and a generalist insect herbivore. 19. Studies on glycosphingolipids in infection, immunity and differentiation
Sammanfattning : Cell surface glycoconjugates play a role in many biological processes such as responses to microbial infections, cell-cell interactions, differentiation, and inflammatory responses. The present work is focused on structural characterization of glycosphingolipids with potential roles in adhesion of Helicobacter pylori and Vibrio cholerae, differentiation of human pluripotent stem cells, and as blood group determinants. 20. The influence of trophic polymorphisms on habitat coupling in aquatic food webs
Sammanfattning : Trophic cascades, together with other indirect interactions are important aspects in shaping the composition and abundance of species in the food web. Theoretically, movement of energy between systems, and coupling between habitats by mobile predators have been suggested as being important for food web stability and evenness. LÄS MER
