21. Ancient roles of non-coding RNAs in eukaryotic evolution : contributions from social amoebae and other protists
Sammanfattning : RNAs not coding for proteins, non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) have many important roles in all kingdoms of life. Especially in eukaryotes, the regulatory functions of ncRNAs have been suggested as a major force in the evolution of complex traits. LÄS MER
22. Inferring Ancestry : Mitochondrial Origins and Other Deep Branches in the Eukaryote Tree of Life
Sammanfattning : There are ~12 supergroups of complex-celled organisms (eukaryotes), but relationships among them (including the root) remain elusive. For Paper I, I developed a dataset of 37 eukaryotic proteins of bacterial origin (euBac), representing the conservative protein core of the proto-mitochondrion. LÄS MER
23. Orphan Genes Bioinformatics : Identification and properties of de novo created genes
Sammanfattning : Even today, many genes are without any known homolog. These "orphans" are found in all species, from Viruses to Prokaryotes and Eukaryotes. For a portion of these genes, we might simply not have enough data to find homologs yet. LÄS MER
24. Single-cell methodologies for ecological and metabolic mapping of mixotrophic microeukaryotes
Sammanfattning : Mixotrophy in aquatic protists is pivotal for our understanding of aquatic microbial food web dynamics. This thesis is centered around aquatic unicellular mixotrophs, and comprises three methodological approaches aimed to tackle mixotroph ecology at single-cell resolution: the identification of actively feeding mixotrophs in natural samples, the determination of specific interactions among mixotrophs and bacterial prey, and the profiling of two distinct mixotrophic populations based on the gene expression of their constitutive individuals. 25. Evolution of biological systems linked to complex cell architectures in Planctomycetota
Sammanfattning : The eukaryotic cells have a nucleus and membrane-enclosed organelles for functions such as energy production, whereas the prokaryotic cells have a cell wall but no intracellular membrane-bound structures. Species of the Planctomycetota phylum are classified as bacteria but have diverse and complex cell architectures. LÄS MER
