11. Support for Ad-Hoc applications in ubiquitous computing
Sammanfattning : This thesis presents work within the area of ubiquitous computing, an area based on a vision of computers blending into the background. The work has been done within the EU project PalCom that introduces palpable computing. Palpable computing puts a new perspective on ubiquitous computing, by focusing on human understandability. 12. Enabling Technologies for Management of Distributed Computing Infrastructures
Sammanfattning : Computing infrastructures offer remote access to computing power that can be employed, e.g., to solve complex mathematical problems or to host computational services that need to be online and accessible at all times. LÄS MER
13. Harnessing Handheld Computing - Framework, Toolkit and Design Propositions
Sammanfattning : The rapid development of handheld technologies such as smartphones and personal digital assistants in recent years has created opportunities for the mobile workforce to take advantage of computerised information systems. To apprehend and harness the opportunities of computerised information systems implemented on handheld devices it is crucial to fully understand the user group and the handheld technology. LÄS MER
14. Space Computing using COTS Heterogeneous Platforms : Intelligent On-Board Data Processing in Space Systems
Sammanfattning : Space computing enriches space activities such as deep-space explorations and in-orbit intelligent decision making. The awareness of space computing is growing due to the technological advances of high-performance commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) computing platforms. LÄS MER
15. Unwrapping Cobol : Lessons in Crisis Computing
Sammanfattning : By engaging with COBOL, a detested and would-be obsolete programming language, the dark sides of automation are examined in this thesis: hidden workforces and computational infrastructures that are, in reality, central to the execution and maintenance of global economic and informational flows. Frictions within these flows are made more visible in moments of crisis when asymmetrical power structures are surfaced, as demonstrated in an analysis of the infamous Y2K Bug, its connection to the outsourcing boom in India and the legacy of COBOL.
