1. Batch Sorption Studies of Aqueous Cadmium and Lead from Contaminated Water onto Selected Biosorbents
Sammanfattning : Groundwater, wastewater, surface runoff and surface water samples from Lake Victoria basin, Uganda was assessed for trace metals contamination. Untreated, base-treated and peroxide-treated biosorbents from Albizia coriaria, Coffea canephora, Cyperus papyrus, Erythrina abyssinica and Musa spp were investigated for removal of selected trace metals from contaminated water in batch studies. 2. Design, synthesis and evaluation of bacterial sialic acid uptake inhibitors
Sammanfattning : Antibiotic resistance is a major threat for our society and finding novel antibacterial therapies is of greatimportance. In this thesis, we investigate bacterial sialic acid uptake inhibitors as a novel antibacterial approach.Bacteria do not biosynthesise sialic acid and therefore harvest it from the host. LÄS MER
3. Physiological demands of competitive elite cross-country skiing
Sammanfattning : Introduction Researchers have, for decades, contributed to an increased collective understanding of the physiological demands in cross-country skiing; however, almost all of these studies have used either non-elite subjects and/or performances that emulate cross-country skiing. To establish the physiological demands of cross-country skiing, it is important to relate the investigated physiological variables to the competitive performance of elite skiers. LÄS MER
4. In Vivo Active Drug Uptake and Efflux at the Blood-Brain Barrier : With Focus on Drug Transport Interactions
Sammanfattning : The blood-brain barrier (BBB) controls the movement of substances into and out of the brain. The tight junctions between endothelial cells and energy dependent transporters in the BBB influence rate and extent of drug distribution to the brain. LÄS MER
5. Dekkera bruxellensis – a Competitive Yeast for Ethanol Production from Conventional and Non-conventional Substrates
Sammanfattning : In the ethanol industry and research community, Saccharomyces cerevisiae is regarded as the most competitive fermentation yeast and therefore industrial yeast populations are rarely studied. This thesis investigates yeast and lactic acid bacteria (LAB) populations in a Swedish ethanol plant. LÄS MER
