  1. 36. Ion channels and electrical activity in vascular smooth muscle: Effects of calcium store depletion, cholesterol and cholesterol-lowering drugs

    Författare :Andreas Bergdahl; Kärlfysiologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Fysiologi; Physiology; statins; endothelin; cholesterol; caveolae; smooth muscle; TRP; Ca2 channels; SOC;

    Sammanfattning : Smooth muscle cells (SMCs) in the vessel wall contract to regulate blood flow and pressure, a function essential for normal circulation through tissues. On the other hand, migration and proliferation of SMCs are important factors in vascular disease, such as atherosclerosis and restenosis following surgical dilatation. LÄS MER

  2. 37. On the Generation of cAMP Oscillations and Regulation of the Ca2+ Store-operated Pathway in Pancreatic Islet α- and β-cells

    Författare :Geng Tian; Erik Gylfe; Anders Tengholm; Patrick Gilon; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; cAMP; oscillations; adrenaline; GLP-1; phosphodiesterase; palmitate; STIM1; Orai1; store-operated calcium entry; insulin secretion; glucagon secretion; β-cell; α-cell; Medical Cell Biology; Medicinsk cellbiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Insulin and glucagon are released in pulses from pancreatic β- and α-cells, respectively. Both cell types are electrically excitable, and elevation of the cytoplasmic Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) due to depolarization with voltage-dependent entry of the cation is the main trigger of hormone secretion. 3. 38. Ion channels and intrinsic membrane properties of locomotor network neurons in the lamprey spinal cord

    Författare :Di Wang; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Ion channels; calcium activated non-selective cation current ICAN ; L-type LVA calcium channels Cav 1.3 ; calcium channels; calcium imaging; NMDA; postinhibitory rebound PIR ; lamprey; central pattern generator CPG ; locomotion;

    Sammanfattning : NMDA-receptor dependent membrane potential oscillations and postinhibitory rebound are examples of intrinsic membrane properties of many neurons of rhythm-generating networks, and are considered to play major roles in the operation of the spinal locomotor network of the lamprey vertebrate model. A significant feature of many lamprey spinal cord neurons is their ability to generate pacemaker-like membrane potential oscillations in the presence of the glutamate agonist NMDA. LÄS MER

  4. 39. Drug use in the elderly : risk or protection? Findings from the Kungsholmen project

    Författare :Christel Cornelius; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Drug use; elderly; dementia; Alzheimer s disease; aspirin; NSAIDs; glucocorticoids; calcium channel blockers; apolipoprotein E; population-based study.;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis deals with different aspects of drug use in a population-based study with participants 75 years and older. The study was performed within the Kungsholmen Project in Stockholm, Sweden, using data from the baseline survey (1987-89), and the first (1991-93) and second (1994-96) followups In the first two papers we used cross-sectional data (n=1810) to describe tile drug Ilse pattern ill this population (I), and to examine the association between self-reported symptoms and drug use (II). 5. 40. Modulation of cellular mechanisms in a spinal locomotor network

    Författare :Jesper Tegnér; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Neuronal Network; Calcium Channels; Calcium-DependentPotassium Channels; Neuronal Oscillator; Neuromodulation; GABAg receptors; Lamprey; Locomotion; Spinal Cord; Computer Simulation;

    Sammanfattning : Neuronal networks generate behaviour. Thus, to understand behaviour requires information on how neuronal networks work in terms of their cellular components. The overall aim of this work has been to link processes occurring at an ionic level to the operation of a neural network specialized for undulatory locomotion. LÄS MER
