  1. 1. To defend or to offend? : Bacterial defence and competition systems

    Författare :Danna Lee; Sanna Koskiniemi; Marjan van der Woude; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :bacterial defence systems; bacterial competition systems; toxin-antitoxin systems; colicin; contact-dependent growth inhibition CDI ; type VI secretion system T6SS ; Rearrangement hotspot Rhs proteins; CRISPR; horizontal gene transfer; antibiotic resistance; Salmonella; Enterotoxigenic E. coli ETEC ; probiotics; synthetic biology.;

    Sammanfattning : Bacteria are prokaryotic microorganisms that can be found in all niches of the biosphere. Bacteria must constantly evolve in order to survive and adapt to their environments. Defence systems and competition systems play a vital role in ensuring the survival of bacteria. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Targeting bacterial infections by using immunomodulatory host defence peptides and proteins

    Författare :Martina Kalle; Lund Dermatologi och venereologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Host dfence peptides; Sepsis; Immunomodulation; Heparin cofactor II;

    Sammanfattning : Bacterial infections and sepsis are amongst the leading causes of death worldwide. Sepsis is caused by an uncontrolled systemic host response towards an invading pathogen. Due to the engagement of various systems including cellmediated responses, the coagulation and complement cascades, treatment of sepsis remains challenging. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Translocation of proteins into and across the bacterial and mitochondrial inner membranes

    Författare :Salomé Calado Botelho; Gunnar von Heijne; Walter Neupert; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Escherichia coli; mitochondria; Saccharomyces cerevisiae; SecYEG; TIM23; transmembrane helix; Biochemistry; biokemi;

    Sammanfattning : Translocons are dynamic protein complexes with the ability to respond to specific signals and to transport polypeptides between two distinct environments. The Sec-type translocons are examples of such machineries that can interconvert between a pore forming conformation that translocates proteins across the membrane, and a channel-like conformation that integrates proteins into the membrane by lateral opening. 4. 4. Structural rearrangements of actins interacting with the Chaperonin systems TRiC/Prefoldin and GroEL/ES

    Författare :Laila Villebeck; Bengt-Harald Jonsson; Bente Vestergaard; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biochemistry; chaperonin mechanisms; bound target protein; fluorescence resonance energy transfer FRET ; Actin; abundant eukaryotic protein; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi;

    Sammanfattning : The studies in this thesis are mainly focused on the effects that the chaperonin mechanisms have on a bound target protein. Earlier studies have shown that the bacterial chaperonin GroEL plays an active role in unfolding a target protein during the initial binding. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Virulence of Salmonella enterica serovar typhimurium and innate antibacterial host responses

    Författare :Eva Bjur; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Salmonella; LPS; macrophages; NOS; SPI-2; thioredoxin; TrxA; TRAPC;

    Sammanfattning : The bacterial species Salmonella enterica consists of a collection of closely related enteric bacteria giving rise to diverse diseases in a wide range of hosts. In the murine infection model Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (S. Typhimurium) causes an invasive disease which in many aspects resembles human typhoid fever. LÄS MER
