1. Mitochondrial function in human skeletal muscle: with special reference to exercise and training
Sammanfattning : The overall objective of this thesis was to study the adaptation of oxidative function in human skeletal muscle to acute exercise of different modes, intensities and durations, and to endurance training. The effects of endurance training on mitochondrial function were evaluated in cross-sectional and longitudinal studies by measurements of mitochondrial oxygen consumption in isolated mitochondria and permeabilised muscle fibres and measurements of mitochondrial ATP production rate in isolated mitochondria. 2. Characterization of a new amino acid transport system in human epidermal Langerhans cells
Sammanfattning : Based on the discovery of a new amino acid transport system in Langerhans cells (LC), various aspects concerning the L-dopa uptake mechanism into human epidermal LC and the energy metabolism of epidermis have been examined and subsequently characterised. The system lacks any characteristics of other described amino acid transport systems in other cell types. LÄS MER
3. Exploring Intestinal Ischemia : An experimental study
Sammanfattning : Background and aims: Unrecognized intestinal mucosal ischemia in severely ill patients may trigger development of multiple organ failure. Such ischemia can be evaluated by intraluminal tonometry reflecting mucosal PCO2 and intramucosal pH (pHi). LÄS MER
4. Energy-Related Metabolites during and after Induced Myocardial Ischemia and Retroperfusion of the Coronary Sinus : An Experimental Study in the Pig with the Microdialysis Technique and Extracorporeal Circulation
Sammanfattning : In the clinical setting great efforts have been made with contradictory results to operate upon acutely myocardial ischemic patients. The reasons for the absence of unambiguous results are not well understood nor are they scientifically explored. LÄS MER
5. Industrial challenges in the use of Saccharomyces cerevisiae for ethanolic fermentation of lignocellulosic biomass
Sammanfattning : The sustainable production of ethanol from lignocellulosic biomass requires the combination of efficient hydrolysis and complete fermentation of all the monomeric sugars present in the raw material. The present work was aimed at tackling some of the major challenges that will be encountered in commercial-scale ethanol production using Baker’s yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, the preferred microorganism for the fermentation step.
