1. Development of molecular biology tools for the wine and beer yeast Dekkera bruxellensis
Sammanfattning : The non-conventional wine and beer yeast Dekkera bruxellensis is of great interest for the food industry and academic research. This Crabtree-positive yeast is a good ethanol producer and can compete the baker´s yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, in ethanol and pH tolerance and could be an even better organism for the biofuel production from alternative carbon sources. 2. Industrial challenges in the use of Saccharomyces cerevisiae for ethanolic fermentation of lignocellulosic biomass
Sammanfattning : The sustainable production of ethanol from lignocellulosic biomass requires the combination of efficient hydrolysis and complete fermentation of all the monomeric sugars present in the raw material. The present work was aimed at tackling some of the major challenges that will be encountered in commercial-scale ethanol production using Baker’s yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, the preferred microorganism for the fermentation step. 3. Genomics and Evolution Studies of Dekkera bruxellensis, a Wine-Spoilage Yeast
Sammanfattning : Yeasts are unicellular fungi exhibiting a huge diversity of life styles and physiologies and their evolutionary span exceeds the one between mammals and unchordates. The recent advances in genome sequencing and comparative genomics accelerated genomic, evolutionary and physiological studies of yeasts, making them a very promising model to study eukaryotic cell, and also deepened our understanding of the molecular background of yeasts physiologies. 4. Dekkera bruxellensis – a Competitive Yeast for Ethanol Production from Conventional and Non-conventional Substrates
Sammanfattning : In the ethanol industry and research community, Saccharomyces cerevisiae is regarded as the most competitive fermentation yeast and therefore industrial yeast populations are rarely studied. This thesis investigates yeast and lactic acid bacteria (LAB) populations in a Swedish ethanol plant. LÄS MER
5. Dekkera bruxellensis, a non-conventional ethanol production yeast : studies on physiology, transcriptomics and interactions with industrial microbial isolates
Sammanfattning : Dekkera bruxellensis has been shown to outcompete an initial inoculum of Saccharomyces cerevisiae in several ethanol production plants, which nevertheless had a high efficiency in one of the monitored processes. Co-occurrence of D. bruxellensis with lactic acid bacteria (LAB) Lactobacillus vini has been observed. LÄS MER
