11. Adsorption behavior of heavy metal ions from aqueous medium on nanocellulose
Sammanfattning : The aim of this work was to explore the potential of nanocellulose, nanocellulose derivatives and nanochitin to remove metal ions from contaminated water. The above nano-polysaccharides were of interest in water purification technologies due to their high surface area and versatile surface chemistry. LÄS MER
12. Structural chemistry and optical application
Sammanfattning : The demand for materials with optical activities against LASER radiation has been extensively increased over the last decade with the development of sophisticated high energetic LASER sources. The goal is to obtain organic or metal-organic molecules capable of increasing their absorptions against LASER irradiance while still maintaining a degree of transmittance. LÄS MER
13. Iron in Haem Biosynthesis. Structural Studies of Ferrochelatase and Frataxin
Sammanfattning : Ferrochelatase catalyses the synthesis of heme by inserting Fe(II) into protoporphyrin IX. The structure of ferrochelatase from yeast has been determined (2.4 Å). The structure is homodimeric with each of the monomer made up of two Rossmann type domains with an active-site cleft between them. LÄS MER
14. Synthesis, Surface Modification, and Characterization of Metal Oxide Nanoparticles : Nanoprobes for Signal Enhancement in Biomedical Imaging
Sammanfattning : In this thesis we investigate crystalline metal oxide nanoparticles of our own design to obtain nanoprobes for signal enhancement and bioimaging purposes. We report fabrication, surface modification and characterization of nanoparticles based on zinc (Zn), and rare earths (i.e. gadolinium (Gd) and europium (Eu)) singly and in combination. LÄS MER
15. Interactions between metals and bacteria : Importance for metal speciation
Sammanfattning : The objective of this thesis is to contribute to the understanding of the interactions between metals and microorganisms with respect to* Toxicity of metals (Cd, Cu, Hg, Zn)* Mineralization of metal-organic complexes (citric acid, histidine)* Metal adsorption (Cs, Sr, Eu, Hg, Zn, As)Most of the studies were made on the gram-negative bacterium Klebsiella oxytoca, but the work also involved a Serratia as as well as mixed cultures of microorganisms from soil systems. Most previous studies, reported in the literature, on the toxic effects of metals on microorganisms have been performed at high nutrient levels, despite the fact that microorganisms in nature normally live under energy-limited conditions.
