26. Ecology and control of Anopheles mosquitoes and human malaria in Guinea Bissau, West Africa
Sammanfattning : This thesis analyses the relationship between risk of exposure to infective Anophelesmosquitoes and different environmental factors, in particular house construction, presence ofdomestic animals and house location, in coastal Guinea Bissau, West Africa. The potentialeffect of permethrin-impregnated bed nets on mosquito abundance in bed rooms, and on thePlasmodium parasite prevalence in children was also analysed. LÄS MER
27. Persistent organic pollutants in benthic foodwebs
Sammanfattning : Concentrations of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in aquatic biota are dependent on several factors both on individual and on system level. Bioaccumulation of POPs in pelagic biota in lakes as well as fish in streams has been shown to be dependent on nutrient regime of the system. LÄS MER
28. Plant polyploidy and interactions with insect herbivores
Sammanfattning : Polyploidization has been suggested to be a common mechanism for plant speciation. Polyploidy is associated with changes in plant traits and altered habitat preference. LÄS MER
29. Linking plant population dynamics to the local environment and forest succession
Sammanfattning : Linking environmental variation to population dynamics is necessary to understand and predict how the environment influences species abundances and distributions. I used demographic, environmental and trait data of forest herbs to study effects of spatial variation in environmental factors on populations as well as environmental change in terms of effects of forest succession on field layer plants. 30. Life at stake when playing hide and seek : Concealing effects of prey colouration and visual backgrounds
Sammanfattning : A prey animal can use different strategies to avoid becoming eaten by predators. One such widely recognised strategy is the use of body colouration to decrease the risk of becoming detected, i.e. cryptic colouration. LÄS MER
