11. Ecology and Evolution of Adaptive Morphological Variation in Fish Populations
Sammanfattning : The work in this thesis deals with the ecology and evolution of adaptive individual variation. Ecologists have long used niche theory to describe the ecology of a species as a whole, treating conspecific individuals as ecological equivalent. LÄS MER
12. Predators in low arctic tundra and their impact on community structure and dynamics
Sammanfattning : The abundance of predators and their impact on ecosystem dynamics is a vividly discussed topic in current ecology. In my studies, incorporating field observations, field experiments and theoretical modeling, I explored the importance of predators and predation in a low arctic tundra ecosystem in northern Norway. 13. Living on the edge : effectiveness of buffer strips in protecting biodiversity on boreal riparian forests
Sammanfattning : The objective of this thesis is to evaluate the ecological consequences of buffer strip retention on riparian and terrestrial biodiversity. Earlier studies on forest buffer strips have evaluated their effectiveness in relation to water quality and aquatic biota. However, forests along streams are species rich habitats for many organism groups. LÄS MER
14. Spatial heterogeneity and biotic interactions : scaling from experiments to natural systems
Sammanfattning : Much of current ecological theory stems from experimental studies. These studies have often been conducted in closed systems, at spatial scales that are much smaller than the systems of interest. LÄS MER
15. Benthic diatoms in the Gulf of Bothnia : Community analysis and diversity
Sammanfattning : Benthic diatoms are valuable tools for biological monitoring and paleo-ecological reconstruction of past environmental conditions. This thesis aims at describing size-related properties of benthic diatoms and suggests that data assessment for community analysis can be improved by considering the importance of scale. LÄS MER
