    Sammanfattning : The overall aim of the present thesis was to develop and characterise an age assessment method based on incremental lines in dental cementum using contemporary bovine teeth and teeth from archaeological faunal assemblages.     Sammanfattning : The fate of DNA from dead cells is an important issue when interpreting results from root canal infections analysed by the PCR technique.     Sammanfattning : The reported prevalence of Enterococcus faecalis, both a commensal of the gastro-intestinal tract and a common nosocomial pathogen, ranges from 24% to 77% in post-treatment root canal infections. If no clues are at hand regarding the identity of the deceased, whether it is a victim of a mass disaster or a suspect homicide case, it is vital to know when a person died, and to know the sex and age of the decedent in order to limit the search for possible matching persons.     Sammanfattning : In randomized parallel longitudinal studies conducted in Norway between 1969 and 1995, and Sri Lanka between 1970 and 1990 the initiation and progression of periodontal disease was investigated. The two groups showed geographical, racial, cultural, socioeconomic and educational differences, and they represented extremes as to perceived severity of periodontal disease, general health care delivery systems and to dental care.
