    Sammanfattning : Background and aims: This thesis describes oral health and the use of tobacco with the emphasis on dental caries and Swedish snuff (snus). There appears to be a general opinion in Sweden that snus protects against caries, but there are no scientific studies that support these speculations. LÄS MER

    Sammanfattning : In randomized parallel longitudinal studies conducted in Norway between 1969 and 1995, and Sri Lanka between 1970 and 1990 the initiation and progression of periodontal disease was investigated. The two groups showed geographical, racial, cultural, socioeconomic and educational differences, and they represented extremes as to perceived severity of periodontal disease, general health care delivery systems and to dental care. The aims of the present thesis were therefore: 1) to investigate the approximal caries prevalence in posterior teeth in 15-year-olds, 2) to study past caries experience in the primary dentition in relation to future caries development and need for treatment, 3) to investigate factors during early childhood which are associated with caries development later in life, and 4) to study the association between age-specific body mass index (isoBMI) and approximal caries status in 15-year-olds.
