6. Tick-borne encephalitis : on pathogenesis and prognosis
Sammanfattning : The general aim of the five studies presented in this thesis was to investigate the clinical outcome and prognosis and factors of importance for the pathogenesis of TBE compared to other aseptic meningo-encephalitis. In a prospective study 149 patients presenting with clinical symptoms of acute viral meningo-encephalitis between June 1991 and December 1993 were included. LÄS MER
7. Adaptive immune responses to tick-borne encephalitis virus and SARS-CoV-2
Sammanfattning : Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) and SARS-CoV-2 are two unrelated viruses that currently cause substantially different public health burdens and distinct pathologies in humans. TBEV infection leads to neurological symptoms of varying severity, while SARS-CoV-2 primarily targets the respiratory tract. LÄS MER
8. Tick-borne encephalitis : prognosis, immunization and virus strain characterization
Sammanfattning : The aims were to investigate the morbidity associated with tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) both in the acute phase and at long-term follow-up, to develop a rapid neutralization test for confirmation of TBEV-specific antibody response and to study the serological response after TBE-vaccination and, finally, to characterize Swedish human TBEV isolates. The morbidity was studied in one retrospective follow-up study of consecutive TBE-patients, treated during a 10-year period (Paper 1) and in one prospective study of TBE-patients with aseptic meningoencephalitis of non-TBE etiology as a reference group (Paper II). 9. Radiological evaluation of esophageal function in dysphagia with special emphasis on achalasia
Sammanfattning : In idiopathic achalasia, degeneration of the inhibitory innervation of the esophageal smooth muscle results in absence of primary peristalsis and in incomplete relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). All treatments for achalasia aim at reducing the pressure gradient across the LES, thus facilitating esophageal emptying by gravity. LÄS MER
10. Acute encephalitis in childhood : clinical characteristics and outcome with special reference to tick-borne encephalitis
Sammanfattning : Acute encephalitis is relatively uncommon but potentially devastating. The prognosis varies from complete recovery to severe sequelae or death. The diagnosis is difficult to establish and the etiology often remains unclear. LÄS MER
