16. Respiratory tract infections in primary care - aspects of diagnosis and treatment
Sammanfattning : Background Primary health care is accountable for most of the antibiotic prescriptions in humans. In Sweden, most of these antibiotics are used for respiratory tract infections, and pharyngotonsillitis (acute sore throat) is the single respiratory tract infection that leads to most antibiotic prescriptions. 17. Acute febrile illness in preschool children in Zanzibar - Infectious aetiologies, diagnosis and treatment
Sammanfattning : Background: A majority of the three million children in Africa that do not survive their fifth birthday die from infections that often start as a seemingly uncomplicated febrile illness. Primary health care workers frequently encounter febrile children with a negative malaria rapid diagnostic test (mRDT), in particular in places like Zanzibar with a considerable decline in malaria prevalence. 18. Aspects of infection and leukemia in Rwanda
Sammanfattning : A first part of this thesis addressed the potential impact of variants of genes encoding interferon-λ4, which is a cytokine that participates in protection against pathogens at epithelial surfaces, for the resolution of upper respiratory tract infections in Rwandan children. In a study of 480 subjects (≤5 years old), where follow-up samples were available from 161 subjects, it was observed that IFNL4 genotypes were associated with clearance of RNA viruses from upper airways. 19. Molecular detection and epidemiological studies of atypical bacteria causing respiratory tract infections
Sammanfattning : Respiratory infections are common causes of morbidity and mortality. Chlamydia pneumoniae, Mycoplasma pneumoniae and Bordetella pertussis cause respiratory infection, often with similar symptoms. Molecular diagnostic methods are preferred since these bacteria are difficult to culture. LÄS MER
20. Role of antimicrobial peptides in tuberculosis and respiratory tract infections : clinical and mechanistic studies
Sammanfattning : Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are effector molecules of the innate immune system in multicellular organisms. They are mainly expressed in epithelial cells and immune cells, providing the first line of defense against a wide range of pathogens. LÄS MER
