6. Stress, Flow and Particle Transport in Rock Fractures
Sammanfattning : The fluid flow and tracer transport in a single rock fracture during shear processes has been an important issue in rock mechanics and is investigated in this thesis using Finite Element Method (FEM) and streamline particle tracking method, considering evolutions of aperture and transmissivity with shear displacement histories under different normal stresses, based on laboratory tests. The distributions of fracture aperture and its evolution during shear were calculated from the initial aperture fields, based on the laser-scanned surface roughness features of replicas of rock fracture specimens, and shear dilations measured during the coupled shear-flow-tracer tests in laboratory performed using a newly developed testing apparatus in Nagasaki University, Nagasaki, Japan. 7. Composite Bridges : Innovative ways of achieving composite action
Sammanfattning : The topic of this thesis is steel-concrete composite bridges and innovative ways of achieving composite action. The typical superstructure consists of three main components: the steel girders, the concrete deck slab and the shear connectors. LÄS MER
8. Excavation in moraine and dense non-cohesive soil : Numerical analysis of soil behavior
Sammanfattning : Excavation and moving of soil are common civil work tasks connected to the construction of buildings, roads and railways. In construction projects large amounts of soil have to be handled with different machines, tools and working methods. Soils are more or less difficult to excavate depending on their properties. 9. Three-Dimensional Simulation and Physical Modelling of Flows in Detention Tanks - Studies of Flow Pattern, Residence Time and Sedimentation
Sammanfattning : Improving effluent water quality to receiving waters using stormwater ponds and storage tanks is acknowledged to be an effective method. The performance of the method depends however on flow conditions such as velocity distribution, short-circuiting currents and the volume through which the influent water flows, the so called effective volume. 10. Field Measurements and Predictions of River Flow, Sediment Transport and Morphological Changes
Sammanfattning : In an alluvial lowland river, sediment is transported in the form of suspended and bed loads. The fluvial process is the macroscopic view and long-term consequence of sediment movement. LÄS MER
