1. Acoustic Sound Source Localisation and Tracking : in Indoor Environments
Sammanfattning : With advances in micro-electronic complexity and fabrication, sophisticated algorithms for source localisation and tracking can now be deployed in cost sensitive appliances for both consumer and commercial markets. As a result, such algorithms are becoming ubiquitous elements of contemporary communication, robotics and surveillance systems. LÄS MER
2. Stress, Flow and Particle Transport in Rock Fractures
Sammanfattning : The fluid flow and tracer transport in a single rock fracture during shear processes has been an important issue in rock mechanics and is investigated in this thesis using Finite Element Method (FEM) and streamline particle tracking method, considering evolutions of aperture and transmissivity with shear displacement histories under different normal stresses, based on laboratory tests. The distributions of fracture aperture and its evolution during shear were calculated from the initial aperture fields, based on the laser-scanned surface roughness features of replicas of rock fracture specimens, and shear dilations measured during the coupled shear-flow-tracer tests in laboratory performed using a newly developed testing apparatus in Nagasaki University, Nagasaki, Japan. 3. Segmentation and tracking of cells and particles in time-lapse microscopy
Sammanfattning : In biology, many different kinds of microscopy are used to study cells. There are many different kinds of transmission microscopy, where light is passed through the cells, that can be used without staining or other treatments that can harm the cells. LÄS MER
4. Position Estimation and Tracking in Colloidal Particle Microscopy
Sammanfattning : This thesis presents methods for estimating the locations (including depth) of spherical colloidal particles in images recorded in video microscopy. Understanding the behavior of colloidal interactions and diffusion is of crucial importance in a vast number of areas. LÄS MER
5. Optical characterisation of subwavelength dielectric particles using particle tracking beyond the Stokes-Einstein relation
Sammanfattning : As the importance of nanoparticles continues to increase in both biology and industrial processes, so does the need for accurate and versatile characterisation methods. However, most light-based methods to quantify size and refractive index of individual particles are either limited to snapshot observations, particles larger than the wavelength of light, non-dynamic particle properties, or assuming the hydrodynamic boundary conditions without experimental evaluation.
