Sammanfattning : The aims of this research was to compare different risk score algorithms with regard to their validity to predict 30-day and one-year mortality after open-heart surgery, to evaluate if the preoperative risk stratification model EuroSCORE predicts the different components of resource utilization in cardiac surgery, and to systematically evaluate the accuracy and performance of artificial neural networks (ANNs) to select and rank the most important risk factors for operative mortality in open-heart surgery. Preoperative evaluation of the surgical risk is an important component in cardiac surgery. LÄS MER

Sammanfattning : The aim was to study some aspects of patients´ well-being, related to nutrition, activities of daily living and health related quality of life, when undergoing major gastrointestinal cancer surgery. Chart documentations (N=45) of patients undergoing subtotal pancreatectomy were studied, and showed the patients' well-being to be affected, although it was not possible to fully evaluate the results of the assessments and the care given. Sammanfattning : Body dimensions of 2,936 newborns with cleft lip/palate (CLP) were compared with 2,031,140 singleton newborns between 1973 to 1992. The risk of cleft development was found to be associated with intra-uterine growth retardation - the more severe the cleft, the stronger the association. LÄS MER
Sammanfattning : Meniscectomy is recognized as an important risk factor for the development of knee osteoarthritis (OA), a disease that traditionally has been considered as a simple "wear and tear" phenomenon. However, despite numerous reports, little evidence has been presented that a limited meniscal resection, compared with a more extensive resection, reduces the risk of OA by preserving meniscal function.
